This study traced the nature of esoteric Buddhism through Beomseo-Chongji-jip(The Collection of Sanskrit Dharanis) published during the Goryeo(高麗) dynasty. The publication, a collection of Sanskrit Dharanis, is considered as a crystal of Dharani faith since it is thought to directly show Goryeo people’s views of, resentment against, and attitudes toward esoteric Buddhism.
The study first examined the publication patterns of Beomseo-Chongji-jip during Goryeo. There are total seven artifact cases of the collection during the period, and they can be classified into four groups of A, B, C, and D. Group D was mentioned in the studies of scholars in the past, but its location is unknown, which means there is no checking the contents of its artifact. Accordingly, it was excluded from analysis in the present study.
Group A contains Circle-shaped Dharani that turned parts of Mahavairocana Sutra into icons in the front section. Group B is characterized by the existence of a preface. There are major differences in the content of the front section among the groups:first, differences stem from the presence or absence of Circle-shaped Dharani. While Group A contains it, Groups B and C do not have it. Secondly, there are differences in terms of Three Kinds of Siddhi Mantra(三品悉地眞言) and Trikaya Mantra(三身眞言). Three Kinds of Siddhi Mantra in Group A is replaced with Trikaya Mantra in Groups B and C, in which case the Dharanis have the same content only with different titles. Those differences are attributed to different subjects of publication. Containing Circle-shaped Dharani that turned parts of Mahavairocana Sutra into icons and Three Kinds of Siddhi Mantra that was the result of esoteric Buddhism asceticism, Group A was published by individuals concerned with esoteric Buddhism.
Judging from the fact that Groups B and C contained only Dharani after breaking up the circles and replaced Three Kinds of Siddhi Mantra of esoteric Buddhism with more familiar Trikaya Mantra, it seems that they were published by individuals concerned with Zen(禪) Buddhism for recitation. When the preface of Group B was analyzed, it became apparent that people understood Dharani as a means of entering Dhyana(禪定) during Goryeo, which is why they published Beomseo-Chongji-jip after stripping it of esoteric Buddhism colors. In addition, the preface of Group B cited major works of Liao(遼) Buddhism quite freely, which gives some ideas about the influences of Liao Buddhism on Goryeo Buddhism.
