본고는 나카지마 아쓰시가 만년에 방문한 남양군도에서의 체험을 바탕으로 집필된, 일련의 남양군도관련작품을 분석한 것이다. 나카지마 아쓰시는 1941년 6월부터 약 8개월동안 남양군도에 체류했었다. 이때의 체험을 소재로 쓰여진 9편의 단편소설은 1942년 9월에 간행된 제2작품집에 <남도담(南島譚)>과 <환초(環礁)>라는 시리즈로 나뉘어서 수록되었다. 본고는 이들 9편의 작품을 분석하여, 작품 속에 그려진 작가의 남양군도 원주민과 그들의 문화에 대한 인식을 명확히 했다. 분석결과 작가 나카지마 아쓰시는 원주민 문화에 대한 흥미와 관심을 보이며 되도록 그들의 문화를 순수한 시선으로 바라보고자 노력하고 있으나, 스스로의 내면에 잠재된 이민족(異民族)과 이문화(異文化)에 대한 우월의식에서 벗어나지 못한 한계성 또한 드러내고 있다.

This paper is an analysis of a series of works that was written based on the experience of Atsushi Nakajima when he visited the Pacific Islands in his later years. Atsushi Nakajima stayed in the Pacific Islands for about eight months from June 1941. Nine short stories of the experience were written at that time, included separately in the series < Natoudan >, and < Kansyou > in the second anthology that was published in September 1942. This paper analyzes the short stories of these nine editions, revealing the writers’recognition of the natives and their culture of the Pacific Islands that has been presented in the work. Results of the analysis of each piece show that Atsushi Nakajima exposed the awareness of superiority or inferiority of different ethnic groups and cultures hidden beneath the surface.
