For the practical purpose of professional use of intrauterine devices dates from the work of Ernst Graefenberg in the late 1920’s.
Ernst Graefenberg(1881~1957) pioneer in the use of intrauterine contraceptive devices during the 1930’ S. His excellent results of the silver ring showed the practical value of the method, setting the stage of the modem era of IUD development.
Ota in Japan reported his initial results in 1934. Among Japanese physicians, the method began to achieve a moderate degree of acceptance.
In Korea, one time, before and after the world war II, Graefenberg/Ota rings were used for the birth control. But after the new modem type of IUD were popularized, especially after 1960’ S, Greafenberg's type were not used.
Recently, we have experienced 5 cases of Greafengerg metal rings removed from Chinese women(Korean descendant) who have come to Korea to work from East-north China, and reported with a brief review of the literatures.
