Dharani faith reflects the hope of people and the aspects of times those days. This study set out to investigate the trends of dharani faith in the 14th century with a focus on the Dharani added at the end of Diamond Sutra(金剛經) published in Goryeo. Diamond Sutra is a scripture that has huge influences on East Asia. It is estimated that it was introduced in Korea during the period of Shilla(新羅). Entering Goryeo(高麗), faith in Diamond Sutra expanded further with the national Buddhist rituals and the ruling class’s interest in the scriptures. One of the outcomes was the publication of this Sutra. The oldest remaining Goryeo version of Diamond Sutra is the one published in the eighth year of King Jeongjong(靖宗)’s reign(1402). It contains many dharanis including Prajna Dharani at the end. The dharanis added at the end of Diamond Sutra were reduced into Buque Zhenyan(補闕眞言) in the 13th century. The 14th century witnessed the appearance of versions that inherited the tradition of including three kinds of Buddha’s words in the scripture and also the ones that introduced new dharanis or put together them with the old ones. Those versions of Diamond Sutra reflect the tendency and nature of dharani faith in the 14th century. The findings were sorted out as follows: first, it reflected people’s interest and faith in Fodingxin tuoluoni Jing(佛頂心陀羅尼經). There were some cases of attaching a talisman to cure illness at the end of the scripture and making it convenient to utilize dharani phrases, which suggests that people focused on the treatment of illness more than any other pious acts mentioned in the scripture. In addition, it seems that people mainly accepted it as a means of addressing difficult delivery. Secondly, Buddhist talismans made a full-blown appearance. They are found in the version of Diamond Sutra sponsored by Gang Geum-gang(姜金剛) and are estimated to have been influenced by Yuan Dynasty. Finally, it reflected the atmosphere of popular Buddhist Ritual for the Beings of Water and Lan(水陸齋) during the rule of King Gongmin(恭愍).
