Increasing prevalence of Type II diabetes in Nepal in alarming rate; a review of literature

Objective: This study has been carried out with the objective of finding out the prevalence of the Type II diabetes in Nepal, a developing country in South Asia. Methods: A literature review was done by searching and retrieving the research articles conducted in Nepal to find out the prevalence of type II diabetes. Pubmed and google scholar search was done with key words: “diabetes mellitus”, “prevalence” “Nepal”. Research articles conducted between 2009 and 2019, which aimed to find out the prevalence of type II diabetes were included in the study Results: Total of 6 articles fulfilling the inclusion criteria was included in the study. Total sample size of the six studies was 25780. The prevalence of type II diabetes ranged from the minimum of 3.6% to 18.56% with average of being 9.93%. Conclusion: The prevalence of type II diabetes mellitus has been increasing in Nepal since last decade more being in recent years. The preventive aspects should be taken into consideration by the health policy level authorities to decrease the burden in coming days.
