Objective: The increasing rate of obesity and high prevalence of type 2 diabetes in relatively young children posses a major health problem globally. In urban India, type 2 diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions. this study was aimed to estimate the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in children below the age of 15 years in Indian population. Methods: Data for this study was collected from the children with type 2 diabetes mellitus residing in India from year 2013- 2018.the age of the children was ranging from 7-15 years. clinical details, anthropometry and family history of diabetes were elicted. All subjects were tested for the presence of anti-GAD65 antibodies for pancreatic beta cell reserve by measuring serum C- peptide responce (radioimmunoassay procedures). Results: All children showed a response to oral antibiotic agents (ODAs), had good beta- cell reserve (0.57 pmol/mL on stimulation), and negligile GAD65 antibodies indicating the presence of type 2 diabetes. Positive family history of diabetes was present in all cases. Conclusion: The clinical, immunological and biochemical profile showed that the children had type 2 diabetes. The profile of type 2 diabetes was much similar to that described in children in many other developing countries. although less common than type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes in children is a condition that needs to be recognized and looked for in Asian- Indians.
