Objective: To assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of newly diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes patients. Methods: The present study was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of 100 newly diagnosed (less than one year) type 2 diabetes patients. Standard questionnaires like 24 item Diabetes knowledge questionnaire, 33 item Diabetes attitude scale, and diabetes practice questionnaire were used to assess knowledge, attitude and practices. Results: Almost half (46%) the participants had poor (score ≤ 12) knowledge about diabetes, while 44% and 10% participants had moderate (score 13-18) and high (score > 18) knowledge respectively. In Diabetes attitude scale the overall mean score obtained by subjects was 3.56 ± 0.2 out of 5. Only about one third of the subjects (31%) were aware of the symptoms of Hyperglycemia and less than half (43%) of the study subjects were aware about symptoms of Hypoglycemia. Attitude of patients was positive towards most of the items but it was observed that there is a need for better patient-healthcare provider communication and goal setting is required to achieve the desired control in blood glucose. In the present study, it has been found that 30% of patients do not pay any attention towards diet control but 70% of patients are either following a diet plan or at least are conscious of dietary control and modifications. It was also observed that about 20% patients do not go for any physical activity and 77% do less than 60 minutes of Physical activity. Only 22 % patients check their blood glucose once or twice in a week. Conclusion Patient education is required to bring changes in knowledge and practice:s of patients.
