Objective: The present study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of “DiabetesSutra”, a mobile health app developed to facilitate and enhance diabetes management among newly diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes patients. Methods: The “DiabetesSutra” App comprises of modules on diet and nutrition, physical activity and self-monitoring of blood glucose. A pre-post pilot study was conducted on 40 type 2 diabetic patients each in intervention and control group. Both the groups received their usual clinical care for diabetes management. Intervention group in addition received “DiabetesSutra” app for the duration of 3 months. Study outcomes were measured as change in knowledge, attitude, practice and HbA1c of patients of both the groups from baseline till the intervention period of three months. Results: Significant change in knowledge was observed in intervention group post intervention. At baseline intervention group had mean knowledge score of 10.08 ± 2.84 which post intervention changed to 11.12 ± 2.48. Change in knowledge was also observed in control group but the change was not significant at 3 months. There was no significant change in attitude score in both the group pre and post intervention. There was significant increase in self-monitoring of blood glucose practice in the intervention group, where 60% of participants started monitoring their blood glucose which was 25% at baseline. Similar changes were not observed in control group subjects. Significant change in foot care practice was also observed in intervention group in contrast to control group. There was significant change in HbA1c in both the groups pre and post intervention period. Conclusion: The “DiabetesSutra” App helped in increasing the knowledge of diabetic subjects and motivated patients for regular blood glucose monitoring. “DiabetesSutra” App appears to be a feasible mHealth solution to support the management of Type 2 Diabetes.
