『万德幽靈奇譚』の主人公である万德の人物の特徵は次の通りである。 一つ目は、身分は下賤で下層であるが、硬直な氣性である万德を通し、濟州4·3の現狀を在るがままに表現した。 二つ目は、万德の超人的かつ英雄的な行動は、濟州4·3の現狀で不可能なことなどない權力に對する抵抗を表現した。 三つ目は、權力という暴力の犧牲になった濟州道民を救い、濟州道と濟州道民に對してメシアのような存在になった。 これらは万德を通して、濟州4·3の現狀で罪もなく死んでいく濟州道民を救い、濟州道を守ると同時に分斷を防ぎ、韓半島の統一を强く望む作家の意志と言える。
