This study aims to understand the dnacer's body making performance mechanism from the perspective of Giddens' structuration theory. To achieve this purpose, I took the ethnographic approach focusing on dancer's daily life and his/her viewpoint. In order to do that I selected a dance department of Cheongrok University (a pseudonym) as a field of my study and collected related data and made a participating- observational study from March to August in 2004.
This thesis investigates the structural typology in the dance culture from the viewpoint of Giddens's structuration theory to find out a sociological answer to how dancer's body making is reinforced in the culture of dance. Dancer's body making is a peculiar cultural characteristic intrinsic to the dance culture, that is to say, a social and cultural outcome that is reinforced and reproduced in the social and cultural environment in which a body is emphasized. In conclusion, I can suggest that the dancer's body making is an unconscious efforts to regain his/her ontological confiednce and to maintain his/her ontological security as a dancer.
