이 연구는 문헌고찰을 통하여 ‘일장기말소사건’에 대한 내용을 밝히는데 그 목적이 있다. 이에 대한 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, ≪조선중앙일보≫는 ≪동아일보≫가 1936년 8월 25일자 석간에 일장기를 지워 발생된 ‘일장기말소사건’으로 인해 1936년 8월 13일자 조간에 일장기를 지워 게재한 사실이 밝혀져 폐간되었으며, ≪동아일보≫는 1937년 6월 3일 석간부터 다시 발행되었다. 둘째, ≪조선중앙일보≫는 1위한 손기정과 3위한 남승룡의 일장기를 지워 전체 시상식장면을 게재한 반면에 ≪동아일보≫는 1위한 손기정 선수의 일장기만을 지우고 게재하였다. 셋째, 손기정의 양정고보 마라톤 선배였던 ≪조선중앙일보≫의 기자 유해붕이 일장기말소사건을 일으켰으며, ≪동아일보≫는 평소 친분이 있던 유해붕에게 ≪조선중앙일보≫의 일장기말소사건을 전해들은 이길용 기자가 주동하여 일으킨 사건이었다. 넷째, 그럼에도 불구하고 대학 전공 체육사 교재에는 일장기말소사건 관련 ≪동아일보≫와 기자 이길용만을 중심으로 다루고 있어 수정될 필요성이 제기된다.

The purpose of this study is to identify a case of ‘Erasure of Japanese National Flag’ via review of relevant literatures. As a result of the study, we have found the following: First, < Chosun Central Ilbo > had been shut down as it was revealed that they published the newspaper (on 13 Aug 1936) after erasing Japanese flag on the athlete, while < Dong-A Daily News > published the evening newspaper since 3th Jun 1937 again. Second, < Chosun Central Ilbo > erased Japanese flag on two Korean athletes, Sohn, Kee-chung (ranked No.1) and Nam Sung-yong (ranked No.3), in there newspaper showing a scene of award ceremony, while < Dong-A Daily News > erased only the Japanese flag of Mr. Sohn. Third, You, Hae-boong, a pressman of < Chosun Central Ilbo > and senior of Sohn in his high school, caused the flag case. Then, Lee, Gil-yong, a pressman of < Dong-A Daily News >, led the flag case after hearing the news from You, Hae-boong. Fourth, text book used in universities for history of sport and physical education is required to be modified as they deals with only Lee, Gil-yong of < Dong-A Daily News > for Erasure of Japanese National Flag.
