본 연구는 ‘기원’은 전통적이어야 한다는 인식, 즉 역사 속에서 부단히 전승되어야 전통성이 있다는 합리주의적 신념이 내재된 진보주의 역사관에 대한 회의로부터 출발하여 한국무술의 전통성과 관련한 기존의 논의들을 미셀푸코의‘기원’의 의미와 비교하여 조망해 보았다. 또한 본 논문의 의도는 한국무술의 ‘기원’을 밝히고자 함이 아니라‘기원’이라는 개념의 이해에 관한 또 다른 시선의 제시에 있었다. 그 결과 이러한 문제들을 푸코는‘기원’의 개념에 대한 해체를 통해‘전통’과 같은 담론들은 ‘기원’을 가지고 영속되지 않고 불연속적인 체계들로 구성되며 외재성을 통해 매 순간 새로운 ‘기원’을 가지고 탄생하는 것이라고 보았다. 이러한 푸코의 관점을 바탕으로 살펴본 한국무술의 ‘전통’에 관한 다양한 논의를 통해‘기원’의 개념은 지속적이지 않은‘개성’의 문제로 다루며 가변성과 현재성을 함축한 새로운 개념 짓기가 시도되고 있음을 파악할 수 있었다. 따라서 진보적 역사관을 통한 한국무술 인식에서 벗어나 한국무술의‘기원’과 ‘전통’의 의미는 주관적인 가치판단에 의해 분절적으로 전승되며‘현재’의 의미와 가치에 따라 새로운 ‘기원’을 가지고 창출되어 전승되는 것으로 이해되어야 할 것이다.

This study started with skepticism about historical views of progressivism that includes belief of rationalism; origin should be traditional, that is, tradition exists when something is transmitted without pause in the history. And the study compared existing discussions related to tradition of Korean martial arts with meaning of ‘origin’told by Michel Foucault for overview. And the study intended to suggest another perspective about understanding the concept called ‘origin’, not figure out origin of Korean martial arts. As a result, Michel Foucault considered such problems as this, through deconstruction of the concept of ‘origin’, discourses like ‘tradition’that do not continue with an origin, are composed of a discontinued system, but are born every moment with a new origin through externality, that is, historical situation. Various discussions about the tradition of Korean martial arts were examined based on the viewpoint of Michel Foucault, it could be known that the concept of ‘origin’ is dealt with as a problem of ‘individuality’ which is not continued, and to build a new concept including variability and actuality is tried. Accordingly, it should be understood that the meaning of ‘origin and tradition’ of Korean martial arts is transmitted in segment by judgement of subjective value, being free from recognition of Korean martial arts through historical view of progressivism; and such ‘origin and tradition’ is created and transmitted with new origin according to the meaning and value of the‘present’.
