이 연구는 플라톤의 음악론이 현대무용에 미친 영향을 살펴보는데 목적이 있다. 플라톤의 음악론에 대해서는 『국가』, 『법률』, 『티마이오스』 편에 잘 나타나 있었다. 이 연구는 플라톤의 저서를 중심으로 음악론을 살펴보았는데, 특히『티마이오스』 편에서의 음악이론은 오늘날 음악이론을 전공하는 자들에게 다양한 각도와 분석을 제시하였다. 플라톤은 하모니아론, 에토스론, 모방론의 세 가지 음악론을 만들었는데, 이 세 가지 음악론의 특징은 모두 혼을 중요시하는 이론이다. 그 결과 플라톤의 음악론은 현대무용에 커다란 영향을 미쳤다. 즉 플라톤의 하모니아론, 에토스론, 모방론은 모두 현대무용의 이론적 토대를 제공해 주었고, 현대무용수들에게 많은 창작의 영감과 영혼의 아름다운 힘을 불러일으키는 영향을 주었다. 에토스론은 현대무용수들에게 음악이 인간에게 주는 윤리적 효과와 음악 사이에 깊은 관계를 심어주었고, 모방론은 유명한 과거의 무용수의 존재성을 자기 속으로 받아들여 내재화하고, 자기가 존재적으로 유명한 과거의 무용수와 유사해 지는 효과를 가져다주었다. 오늘날 백조의 호수, 지젤 등의 작품이 수십 년이 지나도 인기가 있는 이유가 플라톤의 음악론 때문이라고 할 수 있다.
