The number of patents application has sharply increased in China. This study analyzes industrial technology and industry-specific R&D productivity through China's overseas patent data.
This study used WIPO IP Statistics data and re-classified China's international patent data by industry sector, basing on WIPO 2013 Concordance and the Korean Intellectual Property Office KSIC-IPC Concordance.
Through the analysis, we could find : First, the registration for more than 80% of China's international patent was in the United States, Europe, Japan, Korea and China is exercising their intellectual property rights represented by the patent in these countries.
Second, China obtained a relatively large foreign patents in the fields fo Digital Communication, Computer technology and Electrical machinery, apparatus, energy.
Third, China showed higher R&D overseas patent productivity, the ratio of R&D investment and the registration number, in Furniture and games(13.07), other machinery and equipment manufacturing(12.67), manufacture of electronic components, computer, TV and communication equipment(5.68), medical materials and pharmaceutical manufacturing industry(3.58).
This study may suggest direction for Korean government and companies toward active IPR promotion.
