This study analyzed ‘Sarosaui’ and ‘Mujochicsaui’, the two important factors of the protocol of greeting envoys from Ming. The Goryeo made the protocol of greeting envoys from Ming which was influenced by Ming’s ceremony system. The process however was not made in force, which means that the Goryeo changed the Ming’s protocol by their own judgement and created their own protocol according to their new situation.
‘Sarosaui’ was the protocol enacted based on ‘Suinmului’ from Ming. However, Goryeo deleted the procedures of king receiving the seal part. As a result, ‘Sarosaui’ modified all documents related to the king except Joseo.
Meanwhile, more than half of Ming’s envoys in the late Goryeo dynasty, came to Goryeo without emperor’s official document. However, there was no protocol in Goryeo dealing with these kinds of envoys. Therefore, Goryeo created new protocol called ‘Mujochicsaui’. This protocol was made based on many cases when Goryeo greeted Chinese envoys before the Ming’s.
