본 연구는 한국 최초의 민간신문인 독립신문의 영문판 ‘더 인디펜던트’에 나타난 스포츠기사에 관한 분석연구이다. 독립신문은 개화기에 서구와 조선의 문화적 교량역할을 하였고, 특히 ‘더 인디펜던트’는 서구의 근대문화를 조선에 전파하는 직접적인 경로가 되었다. ‘더 인디펜던트’는 이러한 맥락에서 스포츠를 소재로 기사화했고, 정기란과 비정기란을 동시에 활용하여 지속적으로 서구의 새로운 근대스포츠문화를 조선 대중에게 전파하는 역할을 담당하였다. ‘더 인디펜던트’의 체육관련 기사를 분석한 결과, 테니스, 육상(운동회), 야구, 크리켓, 자전거, 펜싱, 축구, 체조, 레슬링, 복싱, 당구, 폴로 등과 같은 스포츠 종목을 소재로 하여 대회 홍보, 운동회를 위한 재원마련, 스포츠 활동의 중요성 등을 강조했다. 이처럼 ‘더 인디펜던트’는 개화기 근대스포츠문화의 확산창구로 활용되면서 한국 근대스포츠문화의 발아과정에 주된 촉진제 역할을 한 대중매체로 평가될 수 있다.

This study investigates on sports articles published in ‘The Independent’, the English version of the Joseon Doklip Sinmun(Newspapers for Korea``s Independence) which was Korea’s first private newspaper. The Joseon Doklip Sinmun played a cultural bridge linking the Western and Joseon at the time of Enlightenment. In particular, ‘The Independent’ became the window through which western modern culture was delivered to Joseon. Under this circumstance, ‘The independent’ published articles on sports through regular and special sections and played a role in constantly introducing the new western modern sports to Joseon people. The result shows that it promoted competitions through articles dealing with sports including tennis, athletics(sports day), baseball, cricket, cycling, fencing soccer, gymnastics, wrestling, boxing, billiard, and polo. Moreover it helped secure finances for sports day and emphasized the importance of participating in sports. In short, this study suggests that The independent’ is considered mass media having played a catalyst in the process of Korea’s modern sports culture sprouting, while having been utilized as a window through which modern sports culture came in and spread at the time of enlightenment
