본 연구는 실존현상학자인 메를로-퐁티의 철학을 중심으로 여가개념에 대한 실존현상학적 관점에서 적용가능성을 살펴보았다. 이를 위하여 메를로-퐁티가 생각하는 지각이 무엇인지, 지각을 통한 지각의 참 의미와 체험 본성을 고찰하여 인간의 여가활동에 있어서 주체적이고 경험적인 참여가 가능한가에 대하여 고찰하였다. 신체는 주어진 질적인 시간과 공간에 자신을 적응시켜 나아간다. 그 주어진 질적인 시간과 공간을 자신에게 체화함으로써 실존의 범위 즉 삶의 범위를 확대해 나간다. 이는 의식이 함유된 살아있는 신체의 여가경험을 중요시하는 개념으로서 변화를 모색할 수 있다. 여가활동에 내재된 참된 경험의 의미를 이해하려고 노력한다면 메를로-퐁티가 주장한 신체-주체로서 직접 참여하여 얻어지는 개인적 체험 즉 체험적 공간, 체험적 신체, 체험적 시간, 체험적 인간관계에 의해서 가능하다. 메를로-퐁티의 지각이론은 지각된 몸을 통해 주체적인 미래를 창조하는 것이다. 즉 몸을 통한경험은 세상의 삶의 태도에 대하여 지혜를 얻을 수 있다는 것은 신체활동의 여가개념에 있어서 새로운 패러다임을 발견할 수 있다.
