‘화두참구’는 한국의 禪 수행자나 연구자들이 漢字 병기조차 없이 쓰일 정도로 보편화된 선 수행 용어다. 선수행을 설명할 때뿐만이 아니라 문헌연구 과정에서 번역어로도 자주 쓰인다. 그런데 ‘참구’라는 용어는 현대한국 사회에서 통용되는 단어는 아니다. 또 전문 학술 번역어로 쓰기에도 그 의미가 명확히 규정되어 있지 않아 부적절하다. 본 연구에서는 參究와 參句의 용례와 그 의미를 역사적 문헌적으로 고찰하는데 중점을 두었다. 그래서 한국어 ‘참구’로 발음되는 말에 대응되는 한자어로 參究와 參句 등 두 가지가 있을 뿐만 아니라 ‘참구’로 번역되는 한자어로 單提, 參, 參詳, 作活計 등이 있음에 주목하였다. 그리고 이들 원어와 번역어 ‘참구’가 혼용되거나 부정확한 의미로 쓰이는 사례 확인을 통해, ‘참구’가 선에 대한 설명어나 번역어로 적합하지 않다는 점을 논증하였다. ‘참구’의 새로운 의미를 밝혀내거나 번역어를 제안하는 것은 이 논문의 목적이 아니다. 적절한 의미나 번역어는 선 문헌에 대한 연구와 번역 과정에서 개별 용어의 의미와 번역에 대해 문제의식을 가지고 구체적이고 명증한 의미를 파악하고 전달하려고 애쓰는 과정을 통해 자연스럽게 정립될 것이다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 많은 선 용어 가운데 대표적으로 ‘참구’를 사례로 들어 이러한 문제의식을 드러내는데 집중하였다.

‘Hwadu chamgu’ is a term used by ascetic in Korea to refer to a Seon 禪-discipline with a Hwadu 話頭. This term is used universally in Korea so that it does not need to use Chinese characters. And it is often used as a translator in the process of explaining Seon-discipline or studying it. However, ‘chamgu’ is not a word commonly used in modern Korean society. Moreover, its meaning is not clearly defined, so it is inappropriate to use it as a scientific term or a translation. The purpose of this study is to examine the use of focusing on penetration 參究 or investigating of the phrase 參句 and its meaning in historical and literary terms. These two Chinese characters are pronounced the same as the Korean ‘chamgu’. In addition, Chinese characters of tí 提, can 參, can xiáng 參詳, zuòhuójì 作活計 are also translated into Korean ‘chamgu’. In this paper, I pointed out that this Hanja original and Korean translations are mixed or inaccurate. In conclusion, it is argued that ‘chamgu’ is not suitable as a descriptive word or a translation. It is not the purpose of this paper to reveal the new meaning of ‘chamgu’ or suggest a translation. Appropriate meanings and translations will naturally be established in the process of trying to understand and convey concrete and prominent meanings of the meaning and translation of individual terms in the process of researching and translating documents. Therefore, this paper focuses on revealing the consciousness of these problems by taking the example of ‘chamgu’ as a representative among many Seon Buddhist terms.
