태권도 경기 겨루기는 태권도가 근대화의 과정을 거치면서 한국이 이룩한 역사적인 산물이다. 이 역사적 산물은 전 세계 191개국의 회원국을 거느리고 있는 거대 경기 스포츠로 성장 하였고, 한국이 세계에게 준 유일한 선물로서 우리의 책임과 역할이 아주 크다고 하겠다. 따라서 경기 겨루기 기술의 체계정립은 우리의 원천기술을 보호하고, 태권도의 정체성을 확립하며, 수준 높은 경기력 향상을 도모하기 위해 우리 모두가 시급하게 논의 되어야 할 연구영역이라고 할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 광복직후 1945년을 거쳐 1960년에 이르기 까지 태권도의 태동을 근간으로 초기 태권도 기술의 모습을 탐구하고, 그 이후, 1970년 본격적으로 시작된 경기기술의 발전 배경을 확인한 뒤, 1980년 초 까지 전개되어온 초기 경기 겨루기 기술의 형성과 기술의 구조 등을 관련 문헌자료의 탐색적 추론과정을 통해서 연구의 방향을 모색 하였다. 그 이외 부족한 부분은 구술 자료의 활용을 통해 연구되어졌다.

Taekwondo competition sparring is the staple product of Korea history which has been achieved in the course of modernization. This staple product is growing leaps and bounds and Oman has become the 191th member nation of the world`s Taekwondo governing body on 4/January/2010. Thus, set up the specific technical structure of the competition sparring is the research field which needs to be discussed urgently for protecting the original techniques, establishing the identity of Taekwondo and enhancing the performance level. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the early part of the Taekwondo techniques between 1945 and 1960, and then to identify the background of the outstanding progress of the Taekwondo sparring techniques in 1970s, and to study the formation and structure of sparring techniques by the early of 1980s through the exploratory analysis of the related documents. The rest to meet the needs was researched by using the oral statements.
