본 연구는 일반 교육학에 기초하여 체육교육의 본질적 의미를 정리하고 이해하고자 연구한 결과, 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 체육을 정의적 의미에 기초하면 신체활동과 교육활동이 결합된 의미임을 알 수 있다. 체육교육의 본질을 추적하기 위해서 전자인 ‘신체활동’에 대해 연역적 추리로 고찰한 결과, ‘운동’, ‘신체운동’, ‘경쟁’ 순으로 의미를 좁혀 나갈 수 있었고 후자인 ‘교육활동’은 체험과 경험이 신체활동에 접목되게 될 때, 전인적 인간을 추구할 수 있는 토대가 될 수 있음을 깨닫게 되었다. 그러므로 신체활동에서는 ‘경쟁적 신체운동’그리고 교육활동에서는 ‘목표를 지향하는 변화 과정’을 본질적 의미로 정리해 낼 수 있었다. 따라서, 이 두 가지 의미를 결합시켜 교육학에 기초한 체육 교육의 본질적 의미로 ‘경쟁적 신체운동을 통한 목적 지향적 변화과정’이라고 정리할 수 있었다. 이 의미는 제반 사회 환경적 변화에 의한 변수를 수용하면서도 변화와 발전을 가능하게 할 수 있기 때문에 앞으로 이 본질적 의미를 더욱 의미 있게 이해하고 정립해 나가야 할 필요가 있다.

This research intended to arrange and understand the essential meanings of physical education on the basis of general pedagogics and reached the conclusion as follow. Physical education is the combination of physical activities and educational activities from the viewpoint of definitive meanings. Through deductive inferring, ‘physical activities' could be narrowed down to ‘motor', ‘physical movements' and ‘competition' for pursue an essence. Education activities could make the basis of pursuing a fully functioning person, connecting undergo and experience with physical activities. Accordingly, ‘competitive-physical activities' and ‘goal fixed direction changeable process' could be summarized as the essential meaning of physical activities and educational activities respectively. And combining the two essential meanings, this study could define the essential meaning of pedagogics-based physical education as ‘goal fixed direction changeable process through competitive-physical activities.' This meaning can receive the variables by social-surrounding changes and also allow change and growth. So it is necessary to understand and establish the essential meaning more significantly.
