이 논문은 태권도의 미래를 위해서 태권도에 대한 연구와 학문의 발전이 중요하다는 주장과 함께 태권도학의 체계정립에 대한 메타이론적 고찰을 시도한다. 이를 위해서 태권도학의 체계 정립의 조건을 검토하고 이를 기준으로 최근에 제시된 태권도학의 체계 정립의 기초가 된 본질적 접근법에 대한 비판적 논의를 시도한다. 태권도학 정립의 조건으로서, 정체성 확립을 위한 핵심적 의미의 조건과 완성적 의미의 조건을 논의한다. 태권도학의 정체성 확립을 위한 핵심적 의미의 조건이란 태권도학이 다른 학문분야처럼 하나의 분과학문으로서 존립할 수 있기 위한 최소한의 조건이 갖추어지는 것이고, 완성적 의미의 조건이란 태권도학이 성숙된 타 학문분야만큼 깊이 있고 체계화된 학문적 필요조건들을 갖추는 것이다. 또한 최근에 제시된 태권도학의 체계의 기초가 된 본질적 접근법은 그 논리적 출발점 및 그에 대한 비판들을 검토할 때 수용할 만한 것으로 보인다.

This paper argues that study of Taekwondo and the development of its academical system is necessary for the future of Taekwondo, and tries meta-theoretical consideration on the establization of Taekwondo theory system. For this purpose I consider conditions for establishment of Taekwondo theory system, and then try critical discussion on the essential approach which is the logical foundation for the establization of Taekwondo theory system. For the conditions for establishment of Taekwondo theory system, I discuss key conditions and sufficient conditions for identity establishment of Taekwondology. The key conditions for identity establishment of Taekwondology are what are required in the minimum for it to be a unique academical field, while the sufficient conditions what are all required for it to be the comprehensive and systematic science. Additionally, the essential approach, which is the logical foundation for the establization of Taekwondo theory system, seems to be much acceptable, considered according to reflextion on its logical starting point and important issues against it, which seems to be misunderstanding.
