이 연구는 아리스토텔레스의 『니코마코스 윤리학』을 중심으로 쾌락에 관한 이론적 배경의 제시와 더불어 현대스포츠에서 나타나는 비윤리적 행위들에 관하여 철학적 해석을 시도해 보고자하였다. 아리스토텔레스는 쾌락을 정신적, 신체적인 쾌락으로 구분하고 모든 사람의 삶을 완전하게 하는 것으로 정의하였다. 아리스토텔레스는 행복한 우리의 삶 속에는 쾌락이 수반된다는 것을 강조하고, 유덕한 사람이 유덕한 쾌락을 경험하는 것과 같이 인간의 유덕한 행위에 있어서 쾌락을 필수적인 것으로 보았다. 그리고 유덕한 행위와 부도덕한 행위를 통해 경험하게 되는 쾌락은 분명 다르다는 것을 주장한다. 우리는 스포츠를 통해 신체적 쾌락뿐만 아니라 정신적 쾌락까지도 경험한다. 운동선수가 고된 훈련을 인내하면서까지 훈련에 충실한 이유는 바로 승리 때문이고, 이러한 승리는 스포츠의 내재적 목적이 된다. 그리고 그 내재적 목적이 성취되었을 때 느끼게 되는 그 기쁨이 바로 쾌락인 것이다. 한편, 스포츠에서의 승리는 또 다른 쾌락을 제공한다. 운동선수들이 내재적 목적 보다는 승리를 통해 얻게 되는 부나 명예와 같은 부가적인 요소에 더 큰 가치를 두고, 그것에 대한 욕망으로 도핑, 승부조작 등과 같은 비윤리적인 방법을 동원하여 승리하게 될 때, 분명 그곳에도 쾌락은 존재한다. 그러나 아리스토텔레스의 견해로 본다면, 이러한 쾌락은 바로 올바르지 못한, 바로 비겁함을 통한 쾌락인 것이다.
The purpose of this research is to understand the philosophical analysis about unethical behavior of sports, along with the theoretical background about pleasure on Aristotle's theory. Aristotle divides pleasure into two kinds. The pleasure of the soul and of the body. It is apparent from the way each pleasure is proper to the activity that it completes. He emphasizes pleasure as requirement to a happy life. He claims that pleasure is an essential element in human's virtue. A virtuous person exhibits virtuous actors and experiences virtuous pleasures. Also, pleasure that is experienced through virtuous action and immoral action are clearly different. We experience both of kinds of pleasure through doing sports. The reason why athletes endure hard training is for victory and it becomes an internal purpose of the sport. Also, we can feel delight when the purpose is accomplished. It is the demonstration of virtuous pleasure. On the other hand, victory in sports offers another pleasure. Athletes may place more value in incidental pursuits such as wealth, honor etc, more than in victory. They use unethical methods such as doping, cheating, and violence to achieve them. Here, there is also pleasure. However, according to Aristotle's theory, this is not virtuous pleasure. Because, it is achieved through unfair play or unethical means.
