This study analyzes the media and other system of symbols at the site of the March 1st Mansae Movement :We studied how the media and symbols were constructed under different categories through a quantitative analysis of how they changed over time, The declaration papers and flags were seen as important media. Based on their number count, the study categorized the demonstrations into four types : Declaration-led (modern media) type, flag-led (participation, mobilization) type, limited media (symbol) type and media non-existent type. Our general perception is that demonstrations of this kind first start as a modern demonstration taking place in the city and gradually spread out to the countryside as a community-based aggression. However, we observe that in the March 1st Movement, different types of Mansae Movements break out concurrently, indicating that they may not be as modern as we normally thought them to be, but show more complex characteristics that go beyond traditional community-based demonstrations.
Such complex media usage in the March 1st Movement shows how the intellectuals and the general public break away from the traditional divide and join hands through new enlightenment and solidarity. The lectures and speech sessions in the 1920s were an extension of the Mansae Movement. The enlightenment activities led by young intellectuals could further spread out through the varied forms of the Mansae Movement.
