Is the mobile phone bringing so much changes in Africa so that we can talk about a revolution ? The purpose of this article is to reply to this question. With this aim, we have analysed reasons why in Africa mobile subscriptions are significantly higher than fixed lines and we have also tried to find out what place the mobile phone takes in the society of Africans. In particular, we have examined why mobile money has grown so much that we call Africa ‘the global leader of mobile money’ and find out what changes have occurred in the lives of Africans with the penetration of mobile phones. We have also reported its political and social impact.
What is obvious is that the mobile revolution has become a driver of economic growth and development in Africa through job creation, small business creation, distance learning and healthcare, as well as online financial services.
