미즈키 시게루(水木しげる, 1922~2015)는 현대 일본 요괴문화의 아버지라 부를 수 있을 만큼 일본 요괴문화의 발전에 가장 큰 영향력을 지녔던 인물 중 하나이다. 그의 대표작인 <게게게노 기타로(ゲゲゲの鬼太郎)>는 묘지에서 태어난 유령족 소년 기타로(鬼太郎)가 매 회마다 새로운 요괴들을 만나 퇴치한다는 내용으로서, 만화, 영화, 드라마 등 다양한 매체로 제작되었다. 그리고 돗토리현(鳥取県) 사카이미나토시(境港市)에 있는 ‘미즈미 시게루 로드’에는 <게게게노 기타로>에 등장하는 요괴를 중심으로 한 각종 요괴 동상 및 박물관이 있으며 2018년에는 약 270만명이 다녀가는 등 다양한 문화콘텐츠로 이용되고 있다. 그런데 미즈미 시게루가 요괴를 제작할 때, 다양한 고전문헌에서 힌트를 얻었다는 것은 잘 알려져 있지만, 구체적으로 어떤 문헌이 활용되었는지는 연구가 부족한 실정이다. 이에 필자는 에도시대 초기인 1677년에 간행된 『쇼코쿠 햐쿠모노가타리(諸国百物語)』를 예로 들어, ‘와뉴도(輪入道)’라는 수레바퀴 모양을 한 요괴, ‘붉은 쟁반’이라는 뜻을 지니는 ‘슈노반(首番)’ 요괴, ‘꼬리가 둘 달린 고양이 요괴’라는 뜻을 지닌 ‘네코마타(猫又)’ 요괴의 이미지가 어떻게 생성되었으며, 어떤 식으로 전개되었고, 현재 어떻게 정착되어 있는지를 고찰하였다.

The masterpiece of Mizuki Shigeru(1922~2015), Gegegeno Kitaro is a story about a Ghost Boy Kitaro who was born in a graveyard encounters and fights off new ghosts every time. It was produced in various media such as cartoons, movies, and dramas. Mizumi Shigeru Road, which is located in Sakaiminato City, Tottori Prefecture, has various ghost statues and museums focusing on the ghosts of Gegegeno Kitaro. Gegegeno Kitaro has been making a large contribution to the development of ghost culture of Japan. It is well known that Mizumi Shigeru pick up an idea from various classic texts when he made the Yokai, but it is not well known what literature was used concretely. For this reason, I took the example of Shokoku Hyakumonogari, published in 1677 during the early Edo period, a Wanyudo which is wheel-shaped ghost, a Syunoban which means red tray, Nekomata which means two-tailed cat, and studied how their images were created, developed, and settled from the Edo period to the present.
