본 연구는 1960년대부터 1970년대 사이에 성행한 전집류 중에서도 ‘과학소설 전집’의 출판에 나타난 한국의 과학입국 담론에 대한 것이다. 1960-1970년대는 국제적으로는 냉전시기였으며, 국내에 한정해서는 6 · 25전쟁 이후 국가재건을 추진하던 시기이기도 하다. 이러한 시기에 맞물려 아동· 청소년을 대상으로 ‘창작 과학소설’이 등장하기 시작한다. 그리고 이러한 창작 과학소설은 번역물과 섞여 ‘전집’의 형태로 출간되었다. ‘소설전집’은 당시 한국사회의 교육열과 궤를 함께하여 유행처럼 번지고 있었다. 그리고 이러한 유행에 편승하여 과학소설 또한 몇몇 출판사의 기획으로 출간을 하게 된다. 그러나 당시의 과학소설은 아동·청소년의 전유물이라는 사회적 인식이 강했으며, 따라서 ‘과학소설’이란 곧 ‘아이들의 공상’에 불과했고, 이러한 일종의 부정적 인식은 한동안 꾸준히 이어져 오고 있었다. 21세기에 접어들어 다양한 문학 장르가 연구되고 있는 가운데, 과학소설도 기존의 문학 장르 카테고리 안에 존재하는 하위 문학으로 인정되어 연구가 진행되고 있다. 그러나 대부분의 선행연구들이 일제 강점기 무렵 번역·번안 작품이나 새로운 작품의 발굴에 집중되어 있는 것도 사실이다. 본 연구는 과학소설이 가장 부흥했던 시기라고 판단되는 냉전시기에 한국에 출간된 과학소설의 면모를 살펴보고, 이를 전집화하여 출간했던 의도의 이면에 있는 ‘과학입국’과 관련된 담론을 연구하고자 한다.

This study is about the discourse of science entry in Korea which appeared in the publication of ‘The Complete Works of Science Novels’ among the books collected during the 1960s and 1970s. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Cold War period was international, and it was the time of national reconstruction after the Korean War. In this period, ‘creative science novel’ begins to appear for children and adolescents. And these creative science novels were published in the form of a ‘complete collection’ mixed with translations. ‘The Complete Works of Novels’ was spreading like a fashion together with the enthusiasm of the education of the Korean society at the time. And with this trend, science fiction is also published by some publishing companies. However, science fiction at that time was strong in social recognition that it was the exclusive property of children and adolescents. Therefore, ‘science fiction’ was only a ‘fantasy of children’, and this kind of negative perception has been steadily continuing for a while. While various literary genres are being studied in the 21st century, science fiction has also been recognized as a sub-literary genre in existing literary genre categories. However, it is also true that most of the preceding researches concentrate on the translation, the creation of works, and the search for new works. This study examines the aspect of the science fiction published in Korea during the Cold War period when it is considered the most revived period of science fiction and studies the discourse related to ‘science entry’.
