최명근은 우리 소설사에서 거의 알려진 바가 없는 작가이다. 이 논문은 그가 필명으로 투고했던 역사소설인 「자결고」가 이순신이라는 역사적 인물을 다루고 있는 것에 집중하여 1980년대에 「자결고」라는 이순신의 문학적 형상화가 지니는 소설사적 의미를 살펴보고자 하는 의도에서 씌어졌다. 이러한 목적에서 먼저 이 소설을 구성하고 있는 서사적 특징에 대해 분석했다. 이 소설은 두 명의 주인공이 지닌 두 가지의 시각에서 전개된다. 하나는 권력 억압에 분노하여 대안세계를 꿈꾸며 이순신이 삶을 욕망하기를 염원하는 금이의 시각이며 다른 하나는 고뇌하고 절망하면서 끝내 자결에 이르는 이순신의 시각이다. 표면적으로 이 두 시각은 역사소설의 역사적 측면보다는 문학적 상상력에 집중하고 있다. 이를 통해 이순신은 복잡한 감정변화를 겪는 인물로 형상화되고 이는 1980년대를 살아가는 근대인들에 의해 투영된다. 통상적으로 알려진 바와 같이 근대전환기 이후 당대의 이데올로기를 담아내는 그릇으로 활용되었던 이순신이 ‘영웅적 면모’가 해체되기 시작하고 ‘인간적 측면’의 조명으로 전환되기 시작했던 시기는 1990년대 이후이다. 이 논문에서는 1980년대 당시 역사소설의 범주에서 작가가 이순신을 호출하고자 했던 의도를 살펴보고자 하였다. 최명근의 「자결고」는 좀 더 앞선 시기에 인간적 면모를 지닌 이순신의 소설화 작업을 시도하고 있었다고 볼 수 있다. 작가는 기존의 영웅상을 재활용하지 않고 섬세한 감정을 지닌 인물로 그려내고자 하였다. 이러한 시도들은 문학적 형상화의 대상인 이순신이 근대 이후 끊임없는 재해석을 통해 현재에 이르게 되었다는 것을 말해준다.

Choi Myeong-geun is one of the authors who have been little known to our novel history. This paper focuses on his history novel, “Jagyeolgo” that he submitted in his pen name, which depicts the historical character Yi Sun-shin, and examines the historical significance in the literary history that Yi Sun- shin's literary imagery of “Jagyeolgo” in the 1980s might have. For this purpose, this paper first analyzed the narrative features that constitute this novel. The novel unfolds from two perspectives that the two main characters have. One is the view of Keum-yi yearning Yi Sun-shin to desire life by being angry at the power oppression and dreaming of alternative world, and the other is Yi Sun-shin's view of anguish and despair, leading to committing suicide. On the surface, these two views focus on the literary imagination rather than the historical aspect of history novel. Through this, Yi Sun-shin is shaped as a person who undergoes complex emotional changes, which is projected by modern people living in the 1980s. As is commonly known, after the transition period to the modern times, it was after the 1990s that Yi Sun-shin, who was used as a vessel in which to put the ideology of the time, began to dissolve the ‘heroic face’ and turn to the ‘human side’ lighting. This paper attempted to examine the intention of the author to call Yi Sun-shin in the category of history novels in the 1980s. It can be seen that Choi Myeong-geun's “Jagyeolgo” was trying to make a fictionalization attempt of Yi Sun-shin with more humanistic at an earlier time. The author intended to draw a character with delicate emotions without recycling the existing hero image. These attempts tell us that Yi Sun-shin, an object of literary figuration, has come to the present through constant reinterpretation since modern times.
