본 연구는 레슬러 양정모의 삶을 조명하여 체육사적 의미를 살펴보고자 하였다. 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 양정모는 1953년 부산에서 태어나 중2때 한일체육관을 통해 레슬링에 입문하였다. 둘째, 그는 1969년에 전국학생아마레슬링대회에서 우승, 1970년 전국체전에서 그레코로만형과 자유형에서 모두 우승하였다. 동아대에 입학한 그는 지도자 오정룡을 만나 기량이 급상승하였고 뮌헨올림픽의 국가대표로 선발되었으나 소수정예 원칙으로 출전치 못하였다. 다시 일어선 그는 1974년 테헤란아시안게임에서 금메달을 획득하였다. 셋째, 결국 그는 몬트리올올림픽대회에서 광복 후 한국인 최초로 금메달을 획득하였다. 이후 그는 조폐공사에서 지도자로 활약하였고 현재 국민에게 봉사하고 있다. 그는 국민이 살기 어려운 시절 용기와 희망을 심어준 진정한 스포츠영웅이다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of Yang Jungmo’s life in the sports history by illuminating the wrestler’s life in detail. The results of the study are as follows. First, Yang Jungmo was born in Busan in 1953 and entered the world of wrestling through Hanil Sports Center when he was a second grader in a middle school. Second, he won the National Student Amateur Wrestling Championship in 1969 and won both the Greco-Roman and Freestyle in the in the National Sports Festival in 1970. After entering Dong-A University, he met with leader Oh Jungryong and his techniques and skills developed rapidly. Although he was selected as one of the national representatives for the Munich Olympic Games, he could not compete in the Olympic Games because of the national policy of extreme elitism. After rising up from the despair, he won a gold medal in the 1974 Tehran Asian Games. Third, he won the gold medal at the Montreal Olympics for the first time in Korea after the independence. he worked as a coach in the KOMSCO. He still works for the people today. He was a sports hero who delivered courage and hope during the times when people were having hard times.
