이 연구는 로베르 가갱의 『프랑스사 개요』가 초창기 르네상스 ‘문인공화국(Respublica litteraria)’의 형성을 보여주는 사료임을 밝히는 것을 목표로 하고 있다. 이러한 점은 무엇보다도 이 책의 파라텍스트(paratext)에 투영된 당대 지식인들의 인적인 연결망과 이들의 관심사 공유를 통해 나타난다. 휴머니스트 인쇄본에서 추천사나 헌정시는 단순히 요식적으로 넣는 글이 아니라 휴머니스트들 사이의 유대 관계를 강화하는 중요한 수단이었으며, 책 판매의 프로모션을 돕는 기능도 수행하였다. 『프랑스사 개요』의 초판부터 제4판까지 출판의 역사는 인쇄업자의 우연한 실수를 만회하기 위해 당대의 휴머니스트들과 지식인들이 자발적으로 참여하여 서적의 파라텍스트를 만들어낸 독특한 사례를 보여준다. 또한 이러한 공동 협력 작업에서 당대의 휴머니스트들과 교회개혁가들의 국제적인 인적 네트워크도 엿볼 수 있다. 요컨대, 르네상스 휴머니스트 인쇄본의 파라텍스트는 당대 ‘지식사회’의 면모와 지식인 네트워크를 보여주는 중요한 사료로 다룰 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that Robert Gaguin’s Compendium de origine et gestis Francorum is a historical source which shows the formation of the Renaissance Respublica litteraria. This point is, above all, revealed in the personal networks of the intellectuals and their sharing of interests, projected in paratexts of this book. In the Renaissance humanists’ printed books, recommendation letters and dedicatory epigrams were not merely pro forma writings, but essential means of strengthening bonds among the humanists. And they also facilitated the promotion of selling printed books. The history of publishing of Gaguin’s Compendium, from the first to fourth editions, is an unusual case which shows the process of collaboration of humanists and intellectuals of the time, to create paratexts to compensate for the mistakes of a printer. This collaboration at the same time reveals the international network of humanists and church reformers of the day. In short, the paratexts in the Renaissance humanists’ printed book can be treated as an integral source exemplifying the Wissengesellschaft and the network of intellectuals.
