슬로관광(Slow Tourism)개발은 지속가능한 개발의 대안으로 인식되고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 슬로시티로 지정되어 개발 중인 전남 증도를 사례로 슬로관광 개발이 대안적인 관광개발의 기법으로서 가지는 효과를 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 검증하기 위해 본 연구에서는 지역주민의 관광개발에 대한 인식을 도구로 2009년부터 2012년까지 4년간 관광개발이 지역에 미치는 영향을 측정하였으며, 또한 실제 슬로시티가 가지는 이상이 현실에서 어떻게 실현되고 있는가를 비교하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 실증분석의 결과는 긍정 또는 부정의 명확한 경계를 나타내지는 않고 있다. 오히려 항목별로 나타나는 지역주민 인식의 복잡한 변화는 여전히 급속히 개발되는 지역에서의 관광개발의 효과는 각자의 이해관계에 따라 수시로 변화할 수 있음을 보여주고 있다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구는 관광의 영향에 대한 연구들이 보다 많은 종단적 연구를 통해서 관광의 개발에 따라 변화하는 지역주민의 이해와 관광의 영향에 대한 분석, 나아가 슬로투어리즘의 실효성에 대한 입증이 필요하다는 것을 제안하고 있다.

"Slow tourism" development is regarded as a good alternative way of sustainable development. This study investigated the effectiveness of slow tourism development based on the case of "Slowcity Jeungdo" in Korea. By applying the measurement of perceptions toward tourism impact, it examined the changes in resident perceptions during the last four years from 2009 to 2012. The interpretation of results was compared with the philosophy and process of "Slowcity Jeungdo" development. However, the results from the empirical study do not provide a clear conclusion. Instead, the vibration of resident perceptions from tourism impact for the last four years implies unique information about the relationship between rapid growth and resident response. The discussion of results suggests considerable issues remain for research about perception changes and Slowcity development.
