오늘날 ‘남도(南道)’는 국어사전들에서 제시하고 있는 전통적인 의미에서 벗어나 그동안 이루어진 사회 구조 또는 사용 맥락의 변화에 따라 매우 다양한 의미 변이를 보이는 가운데 일정한 의미 변화가 진행 중이 라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 언어적 사실에 기초하여 본 연구에서는 ‘남도’의 지리적 의미가 전통적으로 어떠한 공간적 경험을 토대로 한 것이었는지를 ‘한국고전종합DB’를 통해 살펴본 뒤, 모두 7개의 주제어와 관련되어 나타난 경험의 변화를 검색 포털 <네이버>의 뉴스 텍스트(news text) 검색을 통해 확인하였다. 연구 결과 ‘남도’는 전통적인 지리적 공간과는 다른 다양한 의미 변이를 보이는 가운데 주로는 ‘광주·전남’ 지역이라는 제한된 지리적 의미를 지니고 있음이 확인되었다. 즉 ‘남도’는 전통적으로 ‘경상도, 전라도, 충청도’를 가리키는 말로 사용되다가, 오늘날에 이르러서는 ‘광주·전남’ 지역으로 축소되는 의미 변화를 경험하고 있는 것이다. 물론 ‘남도’의 의미는 본 연구에서 관찰된 주제어 외에 더 많은 수의 주제어들이 보여주는 의미 변이의 총합을 토대로 추출되어야 한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 본고는 우리의 사전들이 일정한 의미론적 범주에 속하는 어휘 혹은 개별 단어의 의미를 제대로 정의하기 위해서는 실제 언어 사용 양상을 토대로 해야 하며, 이러한 문제를 해결하는 데 웹 말뭉치 (web corpus)의 활용이 유용할 수 있음을 밝혔다는 데 그 의의가 있다.

Today, it seems that certain changes in meaning of 'South Jeolla Province [남도(Namdo)]' are under way with a wide variety of semantic variations, as the social structure has changed so far, away from the traditional meanings presented in the Korean language dictionaries. Based on these linguistic facts, in the present study, it was looked at the Korean classical comprehensive database to find out what spatial experience the geographical meaning of 'South Jeolla Province' was traditionally built on, and then checked the changes of experience through the news textual search of the portal < Naver >. In conclusion, the results of this study have confirmed that 'South Jeolla Province' has a limited geographical meaning, mainly the 'Gwangju and Jeonnam' region, with various semantic variations that are different from traditional geographical areas. In other words, "South Province of Korea (Namdo)" has traditionally been used as a reference to "Gyeongsang-Province, Jeolla-Province, and Chungcheong-Province," but is experiencing a change in meaning that by now it is being reduced to the "Gwangju-Jeonnam" region. Of course, the meaning of 'South Jeolla Province' should be derived based on the sum of the semantic variations shown by more key words than the key words observed in this study. Nevertheless, it is very meaningful that our dictionaries should be based on the patterns of actual language usage in order to properly define the meaning of vocabularies or individual words that belongs to a certain semantic category, and that the use of web corpus can be useful in solving these problems.
