‘헹가래’의 어원 설명은 그와 관련된 근대국어 이후의 용례(‘헤염가레, 헤엄가□, 헴가□, 헹가래’, ‘헤영가□, 허영가□, 허엉가□, 혀영가□, 에영가□’ 등)가 다수 발견되어 한결 쉬워졌다. 이들 근대국어 이후의 용례를 통해 볼 때 ‘헹가래’는 ‘헤염가래’에서 온 것으로 보아 문제가 없다. ‘헤염가래’는 ‘헤염[游]’과 ‘가래[杴]’가 결합된 형태로 보인다. ‘헹가래’를 지시하는 단어를 만드는 데 ‘가래’를 이용한 것은 ‘헹가래’의 앞뒤로 내밀었다 들이켰다 하는 행위가 가래질의 행위와 유사하기 때문이며, ‘헤염’을 이용한 것은 ‘헹가래’의 네 활개를 잡힌 채 벗어나려고 발버둥치는 행위가 헤엄치는 행위와 유사하기 때문으로 이해된다. ‘헤염가래’는 본래 ‘치하하거나 벌을 주기 위해 네 활개를 잡고 앞뒤로 내밀었다 들이켰다 하는 반복 행위’를 가리킨다. 지금은 ‘치하하기 위해 네 활개를 잡고 위아래로 던졌다 받았다 하는 행위’를 가리켜 의미가 상당히 달라졌다. 행위의 ‘의도’와 ‘방식’에서 큰 차이가 생긴 것이다. 의미 변화는 네 단계로 나누어 설명할 수 있는데, 이는 결국 행위의 ‘의도’와 ‘방식’에서의 네 단계 변화로 이해할 수 있다. ‘헤염가래’에서 ‘헹가래’로까지의 어형 변화는 문헌 예만으로도 설명이 가능하다. ‘헤염[游]’이 ‘헤엄’을 거쳐 ‘헴’으로 축약되듯, ‘헤염가래’ 또한 ‘헤엄가래’를 거쳐 ‘헴가래’로 축약되고, 이어서 자음동화하여 ‘헹가래’로 변할 수 있기 때문이다.

Because there have been found many modern Korean words related to the word ‘헹가래’(‘헤염가레, 헤엄가□, 헴가□’, ‘헤영가□, 허영가□, 허엉가□, 혀영가□, 에영가□,’ etc.) found in some manuscripts, it is very easy to trace the origin and development of ‘헹가래.’ According to modern Korean usage, ‘헹가래’ could be assumed to be from ‘헤염가래.’ The word seems to be a composition of ‘헤염[游]’ and ‘가래[杴]’. In the word ‘헤염가래’, the act of ‘헤염’ is similar to the act of ‘헹가래’(trying to stretch their legs and arms to escape from the bond) and the act of ‘가래’(digging with a spade) is similar to the act of ‘헹가래’(pushing and pulling someone’s body). Originally, ‘헤염가래’ is a repetitive act of holding someone’s legs and arms and pushing and pulling in air to praise or punish someone. Nowadays, ‘헹가래’ is an act of holding someone’s legs and arms and tossing or hoisting someone shoulder-high in the air. The two acts are different in ‘intention’ and ‘way of acting.’ The difference can be understood by a 4-step-change process of ‘intention’ and ‘way of acting.’ Examining many example usages in scripts, it is possible to trace the origin of ‘헹가래’ in ‘헤염가래.’ As ‘헤 염[游]’ became ‘헤엄’ and then ‘헴’ by word contraction, the ‘헤염가래’ became ‘헤엄가래,’ ‘헴가래’, and then can be in the form of ‘헹가래’ lastly by consonant assimilation.
