이 논문의 목적은 통시적 음운 변화의 흔적이 공시태 내에 잔존하는 현상에 대해 기술하고, 그러한 흔적의 존재 및 소멸에 대한 음운론적 해석을 시도하는 것이다. ㅿ>ø의 흔적이 공시태 내에 잔존하는 예로 다음의 세 가지를 제시한다. 첫째, 전남 방언에는 ㅅ(>ㅿ) 말음 체언이 ㅅ>ㅿ>ø 변화를 겪은 후에도 이전 시기와 같은 패턴의 계사 결합 및 조사 결합 양상을 보여 주는 예가 존재한다. 둘째, 함북 육진 방언에는 선어말어미 ‘-□-’이 ‘-□->-□->-□->-읍-’의 변화를 겪은 후, 모음이나 유음으로 끝나는 어간과 결합할 때, ㅿ>ø의 흔적을 포함한 ‘으’가 탈락하지 않는 현상이 존재한다. 셋째, 중부 방언의 이른바 ‘ㅅ 변칙 용언’의 활용 양상에서도 (ㅅ>)ㅿ>ø 변화의 흔적을 확인할 수 있다. 다만, 이러한 활용 패턴은 점차 변화되고 있어, 음운변화의 흔적이 영구적인 것은 아님을 시사한다. 이 같은 흔적의 존재를 통해, 화자의 발화 산출에도 일종의 관성이 작용한다는 사실을 알 수 있다. 그리고 이러한 흔적의 잔존과, 그것의 점진적 소멸은 발화 기반 이론 및 용례 기반 모형의 관점에서 합리적으로 설명될 수 있다.

This paper aims to describe the phenomena that the traces of the diachronic phonological changes remain in synchrony. Furthermore, it also aims to attempt to interpret the existence and the dis-appearance of those traces from the phonological point of view. Three main examples of the existence of the traces of ‘z>ø’ are as follows. First, there are some examples that the declensional stems ending with ‘s(>z)’ illustrate the same pattern of inflection as in the past even after the ‘s>z>ø’ change occurred in Jeonnam dialect. Second, there exist the phenomena that the vowel ‘i’ in the prefinal ending ‘-ip-’ never be deleted after stems ending with vowels or a liquid in Hambuk Yukjin dialect. It is supposed that the trace of ‘z>ø’ remains in the prefinal ending ‘-ip-’ even after the original prefinal ending ‘sΛp’ has been changed to ‘-ip-’. Third, we can also find the traces of ‘s>z>ø’ change in the pattern of conjugation of the so-called ‘s-irregular verbs’ in Central dialect. However, it is supposed that the traces of phonological changes are not permanent since the pattern of conjugation has been gradually changed. In summary, this paper shows that a sort of inertia works in the speech production of speakers through examining the existence of the traces of changes. The existence and the disappearance of those traces can be explained reasonably from the viewpoint of utter-ance-based theory and exemplar-based model.
