이 논문의 목적은 가탐의 기록을 분석하여 8세기경의 평양성의 위치를 추정해 보는데 있다. 학계에 일반적으로 인식되어진 평양의 위치는 평안남도 평양이다. 그러나 고구려의 수도로서의 평양의 위치에 대해서는 삼국사기에 천도의 기록이 있다. 역사적 관점에서 지명의 이동은 특별한 일이 아니다. 수도의 이전 또한 마찬가지다. 이러한 맥락에서 본다면 평양이라는 지명도 오랜 기간 사용되어졌기 때문에 위치의 이동이 있었을 가능성이 있다고 하겠다. 따라서 필자는 8세기경의 기록인 가탐도리기에서 영주로의 기록을 가지고 문헌을 해석하고 지리정보를 고려한 이동경로를 적용하여 8세기경 평양의 위치가 평안남도 평양이 아닌 다른 곳에 위치하였을 가능성을 제시해 보고자 한다.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze Jia Dan's records and estimate the location of Pyongyang castle at that time. Pyongyang's location, generally recognized by the academic community, is Pyongyang, South Pyongan Province. The transfer of geographical names from a historical point of view is nothing special. The same is true of the relocation of the capital. With Jia Dan's records and geographical information, I would like to suggest that Pyongyang castle in the 8th century may have been in a different position from its current location.
