탈북문학은 통일로 나아가는 시점에 꾸준히 제기된 사회적 문제들을 상기 시킨다. 탈북자의 인권 문제, 남북간의 이념체계로 인한 남한 사회 부적응, 자본주의에 대한 비판 등 다양한 주제의식이 소설에 투영되었다. 물론 작가들의 작품에 투영된 분단현실, 폭력과 인신매매, 노동착취 등 탈경계인의 인권문제는 다양한 시선도 소설에 형상화되었다. 1990년대부터 2010년대까지 남한에 발표된 탈북자를 소재로 한 소설은 사회적인 관점은 물론 개인의 정체성 문제까지 폭넓게 다뤄져 왔고, 남한작가들이 탈북자를 소재로 한 작품과 탈북작가의 작품에 이르기까지 한국 소설의 전반적인 연구가 활발하게 이뤄져왔다. 여기서 중요한 관점은 통일 시대를 대비하여 소수자의 정체성 문제에 대한 시각이 절실히 필요함을 제기한다. 탈북문학이 갖는 사회 현상의 반영은 남한사회에서 뿌리내리기, 소수자의 존재에 대한 가치, 제3국에서의 정체성, 인권 문제 등 탈북자의 소외된 존재성과 인권문제에 대한 탐구가 통일을 대비하는 우리 사회에서 소수자의 개인의 문제에서 사회적인 관심으로 확대 연구되어야 한다고 본다. 한국사회가 다문화사회로의 적극적인 진입으로 탈북자를 소수자에 국한시키는 관점에도 한계에 이르렀다. 분단 극복과 통일 시대를 예비하는 시점에서 경계인의 면모를 드러낸 탈북문학의 관심과 연구는 탈경계인으로서 뿌리 없는 삶에서 한 개인의 정체성 회복을, 통일 시대에 발생할 사회문제를 진단할 수 있는 계기를 마련할 것이다. 본고는 제3국에 거주하는 탈경계인이 경험하는 폭력과 인신매매 등의 인권문제, 소수자의 정체성, 남파 공작원이나 제3국 망명과 같은 자발적·비자발적 탈경계인의 면모를 그린 소설을 중심으로 살펴보고자 한다. 탈북 현상의 사회적 문제에서 벗어나 뿌리 뽑힌 자, 뿌리 없는 사람의 경계에 선 탈경계인의 삶의 서사 복원은 통일 시대를 예비하는 발판이 되어줄 것이다.

The literature of North Korean defection reminds us of the social problems that have been raised steadily at this time while stepping on to the unification. A variety of thematic consciousness such as human rights issues of North Korean defectors, maladjustments to the South Korean society caused by the differences in ideological system between the two Koreas as well as criticism of capitalism, etc. are contained in the novels. Of course, the reality of division reflected in the works of writers as well as human rights issues of trans-boundaries men such as violence, human trafficking and exploitation of labor, etc. have been projected into the novels with various views. Those novels published in South Korea during the period from the 1990s to the 2010s based on North Korean defectors have covered wide subjects not only of social views but also of personal identity issues, and there have made very active studies on the whole Korean novels from South Korean writers’ works based on North Korean defectors to North Korean defectors’ works. Here an important viewpoint is raised of a desperate necessity for the perspective on the identity issue of minority in preparation for the era of unification. Regarding these reflections of the social phenomenon contained in the literature of North Korean defection, it is considered that the exploration of North Korean defectors’ neglected presence such as taking root in the South Korean society, the value of the minority’s presence and their identity in a third country, etc. should be studied more extensively from individual problems of the minority to social interests in our society preparing for the unification. Such perspective to confine North Korean defectors to the minority has also reached to a limit because the South Korean society had actively entered into a multi-cultural society. At this point of time overcoming the division and preparing for the era of unification, such interest in and research of the literature of North Korean defection, which reveals the aspects of trans-boundaries men, will provide an opportunity for the recovery of an individual’s identity from the rootless life as a trans-boundaries man and for diagnosing social problems which may come up in the era of unification. This study has an intention to look into the novels focusing on the ones describing human rights issues such as violence and human trafficking experienced by trans-boundaries men living in third countries, the identity of minority and the aspects of voluntary or involuntary trans-boundaries men such as an espionage sent to South Korea or an asylum to a third country, etc. Out of the social problems caused by the phenomenon of North Korean defection, the restoration of the epic history of trans-boundaries men’s life who are standing on a boundary as a uprooted person or even as a rootless person will serve as a stepping stone preliminary to the era of unification.
