여성할례, 즉 음핵절제는 여성의 성욕과 생산성을 통제하고자 남성중심사회에서 전통적으로 행해져온 가부장적 기제이다. 할례가 행해지는 나라들에서 여성 음핵절제는 전통적 관습임에도 불구하고 이를 공공연히 언급하는 것은 금기이다. 제 1세계 흑인여성작가인 앨리스 워커는 『기쁨의 비밀을 간직하며』에서 제 3세계에서 여성에게 행해지는 음핵절제 관습의 과정과 그것의 부당함을 부각시키며, 발화가 금지된 관습을 공적인 논의의 장으로 이끌어내고 있다. 또한 워커는 작품의 배경으로 제국주의 하에 처해있는 아프리카 부족을 선택하고 있는데, 이를 통해 식민지인의 주체성을 찾기 위하여 전통 문화에 집착하는, 특히 음핵절제와 같은 여성 억압적 행위들을 전통 계승의 일부로 두고 그것을 고수하려하는 식민지 민족주의 문제를 비판한다. 워커는 여성에게 관습이라는 이름으로 고통을 가하는 식민지 민족주의의 폭력성을 비판하며, 이러한 여성 억압적 전통이 민족주의 혹은 고유문화의 계승이라는 ‘의무’로 낭만화 되어 여성 스스로 전통을 지켜나가도록 하고 있다고 말한다. 이것을 바탕으로 워커는 오랜 시간 동안 가혹한 전통이 유지될 수 있었던 이유를 여성들 자신에서도 찾으려 한다. 그러므로 이 논문에서는 식민지 상황에서 민족주의 이데올로기가 여성 억압적 관습에 어떠한 작용을 하고 있는지 살펴보는 한편, 여성 할례의 존속 이유 및 민족주의 이데올로기에 순응하며 관습의 유지에 협조하고 스스로 희생자이면서 같은 여성을 희생시키는, 즉 자신들의 문제를 침묵하고 억압적 상황에 동조함으로써 스스로 역사 속에서 지워진 여성들의 문제를 논의하였다.

In Possessing the Secret of Joy, Alice Walker explores an African woman who experiences genital mutilation and criticizes ritual female circumcision as patriarchal sexual oppression of women. Walker not only condemns female circumcision as institutionalized sexual oppression of women but also indicts women on charges of being accomplices in the practice of clitoridectomy. In this text, the women who experience female circumcision don’t deny the edict of silence; consequently; they help the perpetuation of woman’s collective suffering from generation to generation. Also, Walker particularly shows that under colonial influence, the ritual clitoridectomy and infibulation of the Olinka tribe has significance as a means of resisting tribal colonization through the female protagonist Tashi’s journey. Gender oppression is often ignored and a tradition which oppresses women’s sexuality is romanticized as the traditional culture in a liberation movement. Tashi chooses circumcision as anti-colonial activity to assert her tribal identity, but after following her voluntary circumcision, she recognizes that the practice is to limit women’s sexuality. Thus, this study analyzes Tashi’s victimization by the tribal belief system and examines women as agents of their own domination within nationalist discourse.
