조지 포레스트(George Forrest, 1873~1932)는 스코틀랜드 출신의 식물학자다. 그는 1904년 중국 윈난(雲南)으로 식물채집을 위해 떠난 이래로 1932년 59세의 나이로 죽을 때까지 중국 서남부를 28년간 6번씩이나 탐험했다. 그가 중국으로 탐험을 떠난 이유는 당시 국가적 차원의 목적, 즉 유럽의 인류사와 자연사에 대한 학문적 인식의 확대와 새로운 공간에 대한 욕망도 있었지만 개인적으로는 그가 당시 동아시아로 번지고 있었던 희귀 꽃과 열대식물에 대한 호기심 때문이라고 볼 수 있다. 포레스트는 찾고자 했던 꽃과 식물을 발견하기까지 중국 윈난일대에서 처음 경험하는 공간의 특수성 때문에 큰 곤경을 겪었다. 당시 그가 직면한 윈난의 그것들은 서구에서는 접촉하지 못했던 인종, 기후, 종교, 식물들이었다. 본문의 목적은 식물학자 조지 포레스트가 경험한 중국 윈난 일대의 공간을 그의 서구적인 시선과 그로인해 자연스럽게 형성된 타자의 이미지와 그 오류를 추적하고자한다. 19세기 서구에서 중국 윈난을 가보지 못한 사람들은 결국 가본 사람이 전파한 단편적인 느낌과 인상 그리고 그들이 전파하고 유통한 이미지를 신뢰할 수밖에 없다는 점을 고려할 때, 포레스트가 남긴 기록과 인상의 이미지들은 실지 윈난의 공간이 갖고 있던 특수성과 간극이 있을 수 있다는 점을 고려한 것이다. 본문은 먼저 조지 포레스트가 탐험했던 중국 서남부(윈난과 티베트)지역과 식물채집의 동선을 추적하면서 당시 그가 체험한 장소의 풍토성을 추적하고 영국에 들여온 식물들을 살펴볼 것이다. 이를 통해 당시 그가 인식했던 중국 안의 윈난이라는 공간은 어떠했는지 살펴보고 그가 식물채집과는 별개로 인식했던 그곳의 지형, 풍토, 인종 그리고 위생 등을 어떤 시각에서 바라보았으며 그런 경험과 인식이 윈난을 어떤 개념적 공간으로 이미지화 되었는지를 추적하고자 한다.
