이 논문은 <도산십이곡>이 교육을 위한 노래라는 성격을 인지하고 이에 입각하여 해석할 때 <도산십이곡>의 의미와 구조가 명확히 드러날 수 있다는 점을 확인하고, 이와 같은 관점에서 시가에 대한 논쟁적 구절의 해석을 확정하고 이를 바탕으로 ‘언지(言志)’ 육곡(6曲)의 의미와 구조를 밝히고자 하였다. 발문과 후대의 여러 기록을 근거로 볼 때 <도산십이곡>은 제자와 후학들에게 체득하여 내면화하게 하려는 교육적 목적을 가지고 창작된 노래로, 이황이 생각한 학자적 삶과 학문의 요체를 담아낸 교육적 노래이다. 따라서 ‘언지(言志)’에 표현된 뜻은 구체적 개인으로서의 이황의 뜻인 동시에 유학의 학문적 논리로서 정당화되는 유자적(儒子的) 삶의 목적과 의미를 구현하고 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 볼 때, ‘언지(言志)’ 제4수 ‘피미일인(彼美一人)’ 구는 학문하는 가운데 군주를 잊지 못하는 심정을 동시에 갖고 있다는 마음을 노래하여 위기지학(爲己之學)의 길과 임금을 섬기는 길이 상충되거나 모순되지 않는 것임을 보이고 있다. ‘언지(言志)’ 제5수는 _시경_ <백구>편에서 언급된 떠나가 은거하고자 하는 현자에 대한 군주의 염려를 차용하였으며, 노장의 허무한 학문을 추구하는 데 빠지지 않고 겸선(兼善)하는 사회적 실천의 길을 외면하지 않는 삶을 촉구하고 있다. 자연과 학문, 교육과 실천이라는 항목을 중심으로 파악한 ‘언지(言志)’의 구조는 “자연 은거의 뜻(제1수) - 자연+학문적 실천(제2수) - 학문+교육적 실천(제3수) - 자연+학문의 자세(제4수) - 자연+교육적 자세(제5수) - 자연의 아름다움=학문과 교육의 최종점(제6수)”으로 요약된다.

This paper aims to shed light on the structure of “Eonji[言志]” to demonstrate that it is a song with educational purposes, which is evident in its meaning and constitution. Based on various records of the epilogue and from the texts handed down several generations, it is clear that < Dosansibigok > is an educational song that describes the life of ascholar and the core of knowledge as considered by Lee-Huang. Therefore, the meaning contained in Eonji[言志] is closely related to Lee-Huang’s thoughts and it reflects the Confucian way of life. In the 4thphase, Pimi-ilin[彼美一人] of Eonji[言志] states that self-learning and serving the king can be carried out concurrently. The 5th phase of Eonji[言志] describes the anxiety of the lord for the wiseman and urges people to live a life full of consideration. This shows that one should not disregard the fact that a wise man’s scholarship and life can contribute to the politics of the real world, even if the wise one chooses to lead a life of seclusion; even when the wise man enters the word of politics, his behavior and traits must not deviate from the calm course of self-cultivation in nature. The structure of Eonji[言志] and its different phases comprising nature, scholarship, and education deal with the following matters: “the meaning of retirement into nature (1stphase),” “nature+the practice of scholarship (2ndphase),” “scholarship+the practice of education (3rdphase),” “nature+the stance of scholarship (4thphase),” “scholarship+the stance of education (5thphase),” and “the beauty of nature+idea of scholarship and education (6thphase).”
