불교를 무신론적(atheistic)이라고 보는 견해가 지배적인 것이 사실이다. 그러나 붓다가 신에 관한 문제에 부정적인 입장으로 일관하였는지는 의문의 여지가 있다. 초기불전에 등장하는 여러 신들의 이름과 그들의 역할을 과연 어떻게 해명할 것인가? 브라흐마(Brahma, 梵天)는 이 가운데 가장 빈번히 등장하는 신이며, 또한 붓다가 가장 극명하게 부정적 견해를 표명한 신이기도 하며, 붓다 일대기의 주요 장면에 등장하여 드라마틱한 상황을 연출하기도 한다. 이러한 측면에서 붓다가 브라흐마를 전혀 인정하지 않았다는 식의 주장은 설득력이 없다. 붓다가 인정하지 않은 것은 총체적 측면의 브라흐마가 아닌, 브라흐마에게 부여된 대표적인 두 가지 특징인 최고신과 창조주 가운데서 후자였던 것이다. 더 나아가 붓다는 自我觀에 대해서도 브라흐만(Brahman)적 요소를 거부하였다. 기존의 아뜨만(Atman)에서 브라흐만의 초월적 요소를 배제함으로써, 자아의 경험적이며 실용적인 측면에 주목하게끔 하였던 것이다.

Early Buddhism has been regarded as atheistic. A cursory study of early Buddhism agrees with it since there is no room for God in the fundamental doctrines of the Buddha. It is a well-known fact that the Buddha firmly rejects and criticizes the conception of Creator God that has a close connection with the conception of Brahma. On the contrary, we come across an instance where the Buddha approves Brahma. In this case, it is not the Brahma as Creator God, but as the chief of gods, or as the suzerain of three thousand world-systems. This paper deals with acceptance and adaptation of the conception of Brahma in the Nikayas. It starts with a brief outline of the conception of Brahma in the Brahmanical tradition before the emergence of Buddhism. Then, it tries to make clear about two different attitudes of the Buddha towards Brahma as shown in the Nikayas. Besides, some doubts can be raised: Why does the Buddha never mention the neuter Brahman which is already seen in the earliest Upanisads? Does this mean that he did not know it, or is it that this concept itself did not exist at that period? Rhys Davids asserts that the neuter Brahman is entirely unknown in the Nikayas, and that the Buddha’s idea of Brahma really differs widely from that of the Upanisads. It is also possible to think in this way: the concept of neuter Brahman has been already assimilated into the concept of Atman, and since the Buddha was strongly against the concept of Atman additional mentioning of Brahman became redundant.
