21세기에 들어선 현재 우리는 포스트 휴머니즘과 휴머니즘 사이에서 갈등하고 있다. 인문학에 함의되어 있는 ‘인간’ 개념은 배타적이고 인간 중심적이며 유럽 중심적이라는 비판을 받아왔다. 이러한 휴머니즘의 과오와 반휴머니즘적 비평이 팽배한 가운데 기존 ‘인간’ 개념의 한계가 강조되며, 포스트휴먼의 가능성이 검토되고 있다. 본 논문은 한강의 소설에 나타난 포스트휴먼적 변신 서사를 통해 모든 사물의 척도였던 ‘인간’이 탈중심화될 가능성을 제시하는 동시에 이를 비판적으로 재검토하고자 한다. 다시 말해, 포스트휴먼 비판이론에 입각하여 자연화된 타자(식물)를 재해석하며, 식물-되기를(becoming vegetal) 분석하는 동시에 휴머니즘에서 우리가 간과하고 있는 점들에 대해 재점검하고자 한다. 본 논문은 변신을 모티프로 한 한강의 『채식주의자』를 분석하여, 기존의 ‘인간’이라는 개념과 인간중심주의를 극복하고자 하는 작가의 포스트휴먼 감수성에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 한강의 주인공 영혜는 이분법적 개별 주체의 정체성적 구조―인간과 자연화된 타자―에 저항하며 탈-인간중심적인 서사를 풀어나간다. 주인공 영혜는 기존의 인간이라는 개념의 경계를 흐리며, 일관성 없는 다중적 정체성을 창조함으로써 포스트휴먼-되기를 실현한다. 하지만 포스트휴먼이 된다는 것은 탈인간화된다는 의미는 아니다. 포스트휴먼은 끊임없이 자아를 갱신하여 새롭게 변신을 거듭하여, 결국 ‘인간’ 개념을 재정립하는 존재이기 때문이다. 영혜는 자연화된 타자인 나무로 변신함으로써 그녀의 삶 혹은 인간의 삶에서 고통과 아픔을 그녀만의 역량(potentia)으로 이겨내며 상처와 고통에서 벗어나 인간과 자연화된 타자의 새로운 관계를 형성함으로써 포스트휴머니즘의 또 다른 면모를 제시한다. 한강의 포스트휴먼 변신 서사는 부정적 전하(電荷)를 변형시켜 헤게모니적 지배와 인간 중심적인 사유에 저항하면서, 인간의 윤리적 가치와 확대된 공동체 의식을 결합하는 새로운 방식을 사유하도록 유도한다. 이것은 고전적 휴머니즘의 규범에 따라 정의된 개별 주체의 근본적인 이해와 확연히 다르고, 모든 종과 관계적, 윤리적으로 연결되어 있다는 확대된 의식에 의존하고 있다. 따라서, 기존의 포스트휴먼 윤리학의 인간 종말론적인 설명에서 벗어나 인문학에 함의되어 있는 인간의 개념을 ‘관계적 인간’(dignified and relational human subject)으로 재정립할 뿐만 아니라 인간과 자연화된 타자와의 관계 또한 재정립한다. 결국, 포스트휴먼 변신 서사는 ‘인간’ 개념을 ‘관계적 인간’으로 재해석하며, 포스트휴먼의 가능성을 검토하는 동시에 휴머니즘을 다시 쓰는 필연적 거점으로 이해될 수 있다.

This article opens questions of humanism and the human subject by examining posthuman metamorphosis from Han Kang’s The Vegetarian(2007). Today, the notion of ‘human’ is under attack as it demands more ethical and eco-philosophical accountability. While this article examines the possibility of an emerging trope of posthuman, it contends that humanism needs to be re-examined in order to elucidate and resolve the problems inherent in humanistic values. To challenge the so-called “human exceptionalism” and “anthropocentrism,” Han Kang frames the posthuman metamorphosis in The Vegetarian, in which the protagonist transforms into the posthuman subject, thereby offering the‘other’ conception of the human. From the ordinary wife to the life form of vegetal, Yeong-hye oscillates between human and non-human and challenges a given system heavily predicated upon humanistic values. As the protagonist transforms into non-human vegetal, she severs herself from the cycle of human violence and transmutes that negativity into affirmation―supplanting liberal humanist subject with the “dignified and relational” human subject. This article aims to cast light on the possibility of the ‘other’ conception of a human subject while examining posthuman metamorphosis as the literary trope that overcomes and rewrites humanism, in an affirmative, albeit critical, way.
