이 논문은 1950년대 일본에서 활동한 화가 조양규의 창작 활동을 전후 일본 미술계와의 관계망 속에서 살피는 것을 목적으로 한다. 지금까지 재일조선인의 예술 활동은 ‘민족’이라는 단선적인 독법으로 해석된 경우가 많았다 게다가 조양규는 1960년에 북송선을 탄, ‘월북’작가라는 이미지 때문에 그동안 충분한 연구가 이루어지지 못한 것이 사실이다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 조양규가 활동한 미술 단체와 전람회를 염두에 두고 1950년대 일본 미술계의 상황을 진단하고자 했다. 그가 어떠한 성향의 단체에 소속되어 있었고, 어떤 미술가들과 교류하며 작품 활동을 이어갔는지를 확인하고, 그것이 1950년대 일본 미술계라는 관점에서는 어떤 의미를 가지는지를 살펴보았다. 이는 조양규가 당시 일본 미술계에 접촉하여 어떤 점을 흡수했는지, 그리고 그것을 토대로 신의 작품의 방향을 어떻게 모색해갔는지를 살펴보기 위함이다. 다음으로는 조양규가 일본에서 어떻게 평가받았는지에 대해 『조양규화집』 (미술출판사, I960)을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 1950년대 일본 미술계의 지형 안에서 조양규의 문화적 위상을 가늠하고자 했다.

This thesis seeks to study the creative activities of the artist Yang-Gyu Cho who was active in Japan in the 1950s in the context of his relations with the Japanese art circles after the war. Often, the artworks and the creative activities of Zainichi had been regarded as the outcomes of their ethnic minority status as opposed to the ones of as artists. Especially for Yang-Gyu Cho, there is little research about him because he defected to North Korea in 1960. This paper inspects the Japanese art scenes in the 1950s through the art associations that Yang-Gyu Cho was involved in and the exhibitions that he held To view how the artworks of Yang-Gyu Cho evolved in the Japanese art industry in the 1950s, I looked into the disposition of the organisations that he was part of as well as Japanese artists who had interacted and how his activities were viewed in the perspective of Japanese art circles. Finally, this essay focuses on the cultural status of Yang-Gyu Cho and how he was considered in the context of the Japanese art scene in the 1950s by examining 'the art book of Yang-Gyu Cho’ (1960)
