진주류씨는 고려 말에 생겨난 본관이다. 이 본관은 문화류씨에서 분파되었는데, 그러한 사실이 기록에 근거한 것이 아니라 구전으로 전해졌기 때문에 세종 연간의 『문화류씨영락보가첩』, 명종 연간의 『문화류씨가정보』에도 상대 기록이 또다른 진주유씨 가계와 혼동이 된 채로 기재되었다. 선조 연간에 류사규는 안간공파보를 편성하면서 토성파와 이봉파의 상대 계보에 대하여 의문스러운 점을 지적하였다. 인조 연간에 류시정은 이봉파와 토성파가 분관된 현실을 인정하고 별도로 족보 편성할 것을 주장하였다. 1세대 뒤에 영광군사파 9대손 류동량은 진주 류씨가 관직자를 많이 배출한 명족임을 드러내 계보를 입증하려고 하였다. 이봉파 진주류씨의 초간보는 1756년에 진사 류필복이 주도하여 간행되었다. 초간보 속에 「보계변증록」이 들어 있어 이봉/토성의 분파 문제와 상대 기록을 수집하고 변증하는 데 심혈을 기울인 사실이 남김없이 수록되었다.

The Jinju Ryu family originated at the end of the Goryeo Dynasty. This clan was an offshoot of the Munhwa Ryu family. However, this is not based on factual records, but was passed down orally and therefore, it is mixed up with another Jinju Yu family in the Chronicles of Sejong ‘Munhywa Ryu-ssi Yeongnakbogacheop’ and the Chronicles of Myeongjong ‘Munhwa Ryu-ssi Gajeongbo’. In the Chronicles of Seonjo, Ryu Sa-gyu pointed out some discrepancies in the family tree of the Toseong clan and Ibong clan while compiling the Anganggong clan family tree. In the Chronicles of Injo, Ryu Shi-jeong accepted the fact that the Ibong clan and Toseong clan separated and claimed that the family tree should be compiled separately. Yeonggwanggunsa clan 9^th generation Ryu Dong-ryang attempted to substantiate the family tree showing that the Jinju Ryu clan was a prestigious family that had many senior government officials. The initial family tree of the Ibong clan Jinju Ryu family was published by Jinsa Ryu Pil-bok in 1756. The initial family tree contains the ‘bogye-byeonjeungrok’ clearly showing that efforts were made to collect and demonstrate the issues of the separation of the Ibong and Toseong clans and their records.
