본 연구의 목적은 장애이해교육을 위해 가장 많이 활용되고 있는 국립특수교육원 권장도서 “장애이해교육 동화책” 에 나타난 장애인묘사 특징을 분석하는데 있었다. 분석 틀은 장애유형, 장애인에 대한 비장애인의 태도, 등장위치와 동화서술시점으로 나누어 분석되었고, 연구대상도서는 2008년부터 2015년에 출간 된 국립특수교육원 권장도서 장애이해교육 동화책 22권이 선정되었다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 1) 장애의 유형은 지체장애와 지적장애가 가장 많은 비율을 차지했다. 2) 장애인에 대한 비장애인의 태도 측면에서는 장애인이 특별한 의지와 능력으로 장애를 극복해 나가야 한다는 측면에 가장 높은 비율을 차지했으며, 3) 장애인은 주로 주인공으로 등장했으나 타인에 의해 서술된 동화책이 대부분이었다. 본 연구 결과에서 얻은 시사점은, 장애이해 독서 자료로 사용되던 기존의 장애이해교육 동화책에 비해 비교적 다양한 묘사를 했음에도 불구하고 장애인의 모습은 여전히 한 쪽으로 치우쳐 묘사된 것으로 해석된다. 따라서 장애이해교육을 위한 동화를 집필. 출간하거나 교육적 도구로 선정할 때에는 동화에 나타난 장애인의 특징을 면밀히 살펴보아야 할 것이며 무엇보다 도서 창작자 즉 동화작가들이 자신들의 작품이 장애이해 교육에 지대한 영향을 준다는 것을 인식하여, 작품 창작시 사회적 책임을 갖고 임해야 할 중요성이 논의되었다.

In the era of integrating disabled students into general education classroom, literature is widely utilized to promote an awareness of people with disability. The following study analyzed descriptors found in twenty-two children’s classic fairy-tale books to portray people with disability (including physical characteristics, attitude, location of appearance, and perspective). Analyzed texts are the recommended books by National Institute of Special Education as a part of disability awareness promotional program. The result is as the following: 1) physical and intellectual disability were the two most common represented population 2) attitude towards the disabled people includes overcoming their disability with persistence and special ability 3) people with disability have appeared as a main character but their story is told in a third-person perspective. This study demonstrates that, despite the effort of diversifying the portrayals of people with disability through fairy-tale books, depiction of disability is quite limited. Therefore, literary works should be published or selected carefully if these works are to be used for the promotion of disability awareness program. The study also emphasizes the impact that the writers have in representing people with disability, thus carrying a societal responsibility.
