여신(女神) 마조(媽祖)는 중국의 동남부 연해안에서 숭배되었던 해신(海神)이다. 마조는 송대(宋代)에 복건(福建)지역에서 해신신화(海神神話)로 시작되었으며 발전과정에서 다른 전통의 종교들과 교류하고 정치와 문화적인 영향을 받으면서 중국의 대표적인 민간신앙으로 발전하게 되었다. 오늘날 마조신화는 중국 대륙과 대만 및 전 세계에 분포되어 있으며 중국인들이 있는 곳 어디에나 마조의 사묘(祠廟)가 있는 것을 볼 수 있다. 특히 중국인들에게 마조는 국가통합과 찬란한 문화적 상징으로 인식되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 중국 역사상 가장 인기 있고 유명한 신이라고 할 수 있는 마조가 신격화되면서 신앙이 되고 시대에 따라 변화된 속성의 특징을 몇 가지 언급하였다. 예를 들면, 그녀의 신분 변화라든가 부여된 명칭과 외형 이미지 그리고 수용에 대한 차이와 양상에 관한 것이다. 또한 이러한 내용을 바탕으로 마조의 다양한 기능을 검토하였는데, 그 특징적인 점은 마조는 영원한 생명력을 상징하고 생산의 이미지를 표상했다는 것이다. 또한 경계와 소통 그리고 정화와 치유의 기능을 상징하며 재생의 이미지를 가진다고 할 수 있다. 특별히 마조는 신성한 힘을 통해 일상적 공간으로부터 벗어난 신비한 공간에 위치하고 있으며, 일반적인 것과 차별되는 특수한 기능을 가져야 하며 최고 권력자에 의해 성별화하는 제의를 필요로 하였다.

In this paper, the most famous god in the history of China mentioned several characteristics of attributes that became religious and changed over time as the Mazu became deified. For example, it is about her change in status and the differences in name and appearance and acceptance. Based on this, the various functions of the Mazu were also considered. Its characteristic is that it symbolizes eternal life and represents an image of production. It also has an image of boundary and communication, symbolizing the function of purification and healing, and an image of regeneration. In particular, the Mazu must have a mysterious space that deviates from the everyday space through divine power, has a special function that distinguishes him from the general one, and needs an offer to be made gender by the most powerful.
