본 논문은 문학치료(poetry therapy)에서 사용되는 문학(영화)이 갖는 치료적 촉매로서의 역할을 간단히 살펴보고 문학치료 참여자(내담자)의 치료과정이 영화에 나타난 탐구여정과 유사함에 주목하였다. 탐구여정에서 가장 중요한 핵심은 여정의 목적(보물)이 아니라 목적을 추구하는 과정에서 주인공이 경험하는 자기발견, 문제해결 및 변화와 성장에 있다. 그 예로 본 논문은 제리 주커 감독의 영화, <카멜롯의 전설>(원제: First Knight)에 나타난 주인공 랜슬롯의 여정을 논하였다. 이 영화는 아서왕의 전설 중 잘 알려진 귀느비어 왕비와 기사 랜슬롯의 부적절한 사랑이야기에 바탕을 두고 있지만 제리 주커 감독은 새로운 랜슬롯을 창조하여 기존의 스캔들적인 이야기에 전혀 다른 차원을 추가하였다. 본 논문은 이 영화에 나타난 랜슬롯의 귀느비어에 대한 사랑과 그녀를 추구하는 탐구여정이 그의 어린 시절 트라우마와 그것을 극복하는 치유와 성장, 그리고 자기발견의 여정이며 진정한 “기사(first knight)”가 되는 과정임을 논하였다.

This paper surveys the therapeutic role of film as a journey and a process. Film is a powerful form of literature that can be used as a "catalyst" in poetry therapy. The paper first discusses the therapeutic role of literature, followed by the parallel process of journey-quest motif in literature (movies) and the poetry-therapeutic process. An example presented in the paper analyzes how Lancelot's journey-quest for his love (King Arthur's wife, Guinevere) proves to be his therapeutic process in healing his childhood trauma and becoming "first knight," in the movie, First Knight (1995) directed by Jerry Jucker.
