2018년 로스앤젤레스 한인타운을 둘러싸고 한인사회의 강고한 결집력이 대내외 적으로 표출된 두 가지 사태가 전개되었다. 방글라데시 타운 신설안과 노숙인 쉼터 설치안을 둘러싼 사회적 논란이 그것인데, 이례적으로 격렬한 민족주의적 집합 정체성 표출이라는 현상 이면에 글로벌화로 인한 도시 개발의 공간적 압력과 그로 인한 민족간·계층간 관계 재편을 둘러싼 이해관계의 균열과 갈등이라는 다차원적인 사회적 압력이 작용하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이 연구는 이러한 문제의식 하에 공간이론적 관점과 인구학적 관점이라는 두 가지 측면에서 한인타운의 형성 및 변천사를 살펴보고 그 특징적 양상을 도출해냄으로써 현재 LA 한인타운의 변화를 야기하고 있는 사회적 변수들의 역사적 연원을 밝혀내고자 했다. 첫째, 공간론적 측면에서 볼 때 LA 한인타운은 ‘입지의 도심 근접성과 규모의 광범성’이라는 특성을 띠고 있는데, 이는 LA 특유의 수평적 도시화 과정에서 창출된 다운타운 인근의 공백지대에 ‘아시아인 이민의 두 번째 물결’을 타고 등장한 한인들이 대거 유입되는 역사적 과정을 통해 일차적으로 결정되었다. 1965년 이후 LA 한인타운의 공간 변천사는 1992년 4·29를 분기점으로 하여 전기와 후기로 대별할 수 있다. 올림픽대로가 한인타운의 중심지 기능을 담당했던 전기가 이민 1세대 한인들의 소규모 자영업 성공 신화가 형성된 시기라면, 윌셔대로가 한인타운의 중심지 역할을 하게 된 후기는 글로벌화로 인한 신자유주의적 도시개발이 본격화되어 젠트리피케이션 현상이 가속화된 시기라고 볼 수 있다. 둘째, 인구학적 측면에서 볼 때 LA 한인타운은 ‘항존하는 혼종성과 점증하는 양극화 경향’을 주된 특징으로 한다. 고학력 도시 중산층 출신을 주류로 하는 1세대 한인 이민자들은 직업의 하향조정 경향과 높은 자영업 비율, 그리고 압도적인 개신교의 영향이라는 세 가지 특징이 두드러지게 나타난다. 1세대 한인들의 소규모 자영업을 통한 성공 신화와 LA 한인사회의 집합 정체성의 통합적 표상은 이러한 한인 이주민 집단의 균질성을 토대로 형성되었다. 반면 LA의 글로벌화에 따라 급격한 사회 양극화와 계급 분화가 진행되고 있는 현재적 국면에서는 이러한 균질성이 LA 한인타운이 처해 있는 다민족 혼성 거주지의 구조적 모순과 갈등적 상황을 직시하지 못하게 만드는 부정적 요인으로 작용하기도 한다. LA 한인타운의 현재적 역동성을 파악하기 위해서는 그동안 당연시해온 성공한 소수민족의 신화와 민족주의적 집합 정체성의 통념적 표상을 넘어서 모순적이고 갈등적인 소수민족 혼성 거주지의 가변적 실체에 대해 입체적으로 접근할 필요가 있다.

Recently two remarkable incidents have happened surrounding Los Angeles Koreatown, both of which issues have revealed apparently strong unity of Korean American local community. One of the two issues was the proposition to make a Bangladesh Town by splitting Koreatown area and the other was a plan to build a temporary shelter for the homeless people inside Koreatown. We can find out the tendencies of social stratification and the compulsion of urban development behind the strongest manifestation of Korean’s nationalistic collective identity. Based on this awareness, this study aims to investigate the formation and transformation of Los Angeles Koreatown in terms of space and demography. First, in terms of spatialism, Los Angeles Koreatown has a characteristic of ‘proximity of city center and broadness of scale.’ It was determined through the historical process of the influx of Koreans who appeared in ‘the second wave of Asian immigrants’ in the blank area near the downtown created by the horizontal urbanization process unique to the city of Los Angeles. Since 1965, Los Angeles Koreatown's changing history can be divided into two periods, the first and the second, with April 29, 1992 as a turning point. The first period, when Koreatown was centered by the Olympic Boulevard, can be characterized by the making of the myth that the fisth generation Korean immigrants had succeeded in small self-employment. The second period, when Koreatown was centered by the Wilshire Boulevard, can be characterized by the accelerated the development of gentrification such as the development of consumer culture and the creation of high-class residential areas. Second, in the demographic perspective, Los Angeles Koreatown is characterized by ‘heterogeneous hybridity and increasing polarizing tendency.’ The first-generation Korean immigrants whose mainstream is the highly educated urban middle class are characterized by a downward trend in their jobs, high self-employment ratio, and overwhelming Protestant influence. The middle-class success myth through first-generation Korean’s self-employment and the integrated collective identity of Los Angeles Korean American society were formed based on this homogeneity. On the other hand, in the current phase of social polarization and class differentiation due to globalization, this homogeneity has been a negative factor that prevents realizing the contradictory and conflictual reality of multi-ethnic hybrid enclave of Los Angeles Koreatown area. In order to understand the current dynamics of LA Korean Town, it is necessary to approach the realities of contradictory and conflictual multi-ethnic hybrid enclave in a stereoscopic way beyond the integrated representation of successful minority myths and nationalistic collective identities of Korean Americans.
