최근 스마트 기술의 발달은 학교 교실환경에 많은 변화를 가져왔으며 특히, 다양한 기능을 가진 스마트폰을 교실 내 학습도구로 활용 시, 그 효과성 여부에 대한 관심이 급증하면서 이에 대한 검증도 함께 이루어지고 있다. 본 연구는 제2언어 환경에서 한국 대학생들의 스마트폰 카카오톡을 기반으로 한 영어 글쓰기의 경향과 그들의 인식을 파악하는데 목적이 있다. K 대학교 2학년 학생 24명을 연구 대상으로 하여 17주 동안 카카오톡 채팅방에 영어 글쓰기를 하였으며 실험 기간 전·후의 글쓰기 경향과 차이를 알아보기 위해 학생들의 글쓰기를 문장의 복잡성, 정확성과 오류유형에 따라 분석하였다. 또한 카카오톡을 기반으로 한 글쓰기 활동에 대한 장·단점과 학생들의 인식 조사도 함께 이루어졌다. 연구 결과에 따르면, 첫째, 카카오톡 채팅방을 활용한 영어 글쓰기는 학습자들의 쓰기 오류의 수를 감소시키는데 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤으며, 둘째, 문장의 복잡성과 정확성의 향상에도 긍정적인 효과를 가져왔다. 마지막으로 학생들은 동시성, 높은 접근성, 그리고 원활한 상호작용을 카카오톡 기반글쓰기 활동의 주된 장점으로 꼽았다. 이에 본 연구는 스마트폰을 기반으로 한 카카오톡 플랫폼이 영어 쓰기교육에 효과적인 학습도구로서 하나의 대안이 될 수 있음을 시사한다.

The present study aims to investigate EFL students’ overall writing tendency and their perception of KakaoTalk-based writing tasks using smartphones. With the written products, which the participants had completed via KakaoTalk during 17 weeks, the differences between the early and the latter written products were analyzed in terms of sentence complexity, accuracy, and error types. This study also examined their thoughts of the KakaoTalk-based writing activities and the benefits as a learning tool in the EFL classroom. The results showed that KakaoTalk-based writing tasks had a positive effect on decreasing the number of writing errors, specifically in error types: VT, SS, WC, WF, and PU, as well as enhancing their writing complexity. Additionally, it was notable that synchronicity, high accessibility, and comfortable interactions were cited as major advantages, resulting in positive potential of utilizing a smartphone-mediated messaging application: KakaoTalk as an alternative writing instructional platform in EFL contexts.
