고종 시대의 학계와 문단의 동향을 거시적으로 살펴보기 위해 南社와 그에 속한 同人의 시사활동과 창작활동, 교유와 관직생활 등을 조사하고 분석하였다. 남사는 상당히 규모가 큰 지식인 집단으로서 일정한 정치적 지향과 문예의 특징을 공유하였고, 대략 3단계로 변화의 과정을 겪으면서 분화되어 갔음을 확인하였다. 소론계 명문가 출신이 주축이 된 남사는 상당히 긴 기간 유지되면서 동인들이 노론 벌열집단을 비판하고 개방과 개화를 지향한 실무관료로 진출하였음을 밝혀냈다. 남사의 특징은 동인들이 즐겨 창작한 회인시에 잘 나타나 있어 집중적으로 분석하였다. 이건창과 정만조, 오한응, 황현, 이중하 등 주요 동인의 회인시를 분석하여, 회인시가 시사의 풍류와 동인 사이의 우정을 표현하면서도 우국충정을 드러낸 특징을 밝혔다. 특히, 亡國을 전후한 시기에 동인들이 反日과 親日로 분화하면서 동인 사이의 우정과 풍류, 인간미를 찬미하던 내용과 정서가 애도와 추억과 울분의 정조로 바뀐 양상에 주목하였다. 회인시는 대체로 반일에 속한 동인에 의해 다수 지어졌음을 밝혔다. 이 논문은 고종 시기의 중요한 지식인 집단이자 문예그룹으로 남사를 부각시키고, 그 동인의 결성과 분화, 활동과 작품을 조명하여 이 시기 학계와 문단의 동향을 깊이 이해하는 데 기여하고자 하였다.

This study researched and analyzed the activities, writings, friendships, and careers in the public office of the group Namsa(南社), a poetry society of the late Joseon period. And its members to take a comprehensive view of the academic and literary trends during the reign of King Gojong. Namsa was a relatively large group of intellectuals who shared certain political opinions and literary traits and was gradually divided into three steps of changes. Namsa, which was mainly led by members from the prestigious Soron families, was maintained for a relatively long period. Members of Namsa criticized the Noron groups which dominated important government posts and became government officials in practical departments who supported the open-door policy as well as the enlightenment policy. This study focused on analyzing the hoeinsi, poems on a person whom the writer misses, which the members enjoyed writing. This paper analyzed the hoeinsi of major Namsa members, such as Lee Geon-chang, Jeong Man-jo, Oh Han-eung, Hwang Hyun and Lee Jung-ha and found that while their hoeinsi express the poets' tastes and the friendship between the members, they also show the poets' patriotism. This was more evident in the poems written before and after Joseon lost its sovereignty, as the members were divided into anti-Japanese and pro-Japanese groups, and the poems, which lauded the friendship and tastes and humanity among the members, turned into poems on mourning, memories, and resentment. This study further found that the hoeinsi were generally written by the anti-Japanese members. This study shed light on Namsa as a significant intellectual and literary group during the reign of King Gojong, and highlighted the establishment, division, activities, and works of the group members, and thus aimed to contribute to the understanding of the academic and literary trends during this period.
