존 오웬의 첫 저서인 『알미니우스주의를 폭로함』(The Display of Arminianism )은 오웬 연구가들에게 충분한 관심을 받지 못하였지만 이 책은 영국 혁명 당시 알미니우스 논쟁을 이해하는데 큰 도움을 제공하는 매우 중요한 책이다. 오웬은 알미니우스주의를 사소한 신학적 오류로 보지 않았는데 그 이유는 알미니우스주의의 신론에 결정적인 문제가 있다고 판단했기 때문이었다. 이와 같은 판단에 근거하여 오웬은 알미니우스주의를 우상숭배, 심지어 무신론이라고 비판하기도 하였다. 비록 알미니우스주의에 대한 오웬의 비판의 정도가 심해 보이는 것은 사실이지만 오웬은 알미니우스주의 안에 있는 핵심적 오류를 정확하게 파악하고 있었다. 『폭로』에서 오웬은 알미니우스주의가 참되고 완전한 하나님을 어떻게 신론의 중요한 측면(하나님의 속성, 작정, 섭리 등)에서 불완전한 존재로 만들었는지를 증명한다. 이를 위하여 오웬은 성경뿐만 아니라 알미니우스주의자들과 마찬가지로 그 당시 보편적 신학방법인 스콜라주의를 적극적으로 활용하였다. 오웬의 첫 신학 작품을 통해서 우리는 개혁주의와 알미니우스주의 사이에 존재하는 세밀하고도 명확한 차이를 보다 정확하게 인식할 수 있다.

Unfortunately, Owen scholars have not pay much attention to The Display of Arminianism , Owen’s first theological work. However, The Display gives us a great help to understand the Arminian controversy during the era of the English civil war. Although Owen’s criticism of Arminianism seems to be too harsh, Owen grasp the very issues in Arminianism. Owen did not consider Arminian theological errors to be trivial since Arminianism contained fatal defects in the doctrine of God. In Display Owen tried to prove how Arminianism made God an imperfect being in many ways. In Owen’s battle against Arminianism we can see clearly how closely God’s attributes, His will, His knowledge, His government and power are related to each other and what the real differences between the Reformed and Arminian theology are.
