셰익스피어의 『트로일러스와 크레시다』는 문제극의 하나로 분류되는 극이다. 고전과 중세의 전쟁과 사랑에 대한 소재를 셰익스피어 특유의 극적 상상력으로 비튼 이 극은 풍자와 냉소로 가득하다. 이 극에서 셰익스피어는 서구문학 전통이 재현한 영웅주의를 탈신화화하고 낭만적이고 이상적인 사랑을 평가 절하한다. 이 극이 모호하고 명확하게 해석되지 않는 가장 큰 이유는 전통적인 장르 개념으로는 분석하기 어려운 많은 문제점들이 있기 때문이다. 셰익스피어는 이 극에서 힘과 자본이 정의가 된 영국의 르네상스 변혁기에 회의주의적인 관점에서 기존 가치체계를 점검한다. 셰익스피어는 당시 극장들 간의 경쟁으로 관객들의 관심을 끌기 위해 참신한 극적 기법을 이 극에서 시도하였다. 기존의 가치에 대한 셰익스피어의 회의적인 시각이 어떻게 나타나는 지를 이 극에 나타난 특징적인 극적 기법과 더사이티즈가 수행하는 극적 역할을 통해 알아보고, 이러한 극적 기법을 통해 셰익스피어가 의도했던 것이 무엇인가를 규명하는 것이 이 논문의 목적이다. 논지의 전개를 위해 사회적으로는 주변인이지만 극적으로는 중심에 있는 더사이티즈에 초점을 맞추어 이 극을 분석하려고 한다. 더사이티즈는 비록 불구이고 악담을 쏟아내는 타인에 대한 사랑이 결여된 인물이지만 다른 인물들이 지닌 허황되고 모순된 이상주의에 필요한 균형을 맞추어 주는 인물이다.

The purpose of the present paper is to examine the dramatic techniques used by Shakespeare in his play Troilus and Cressida, focusing on the dramatic role of Thersites who is a sort of court jester, and to elucidate the intentions of Shakespeare through these dramatic techniques. Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida is a play classified as a problem play. The play is full of sarcasm and cynicism with Shakespeare's distinctive dramatic imagination about the war and love of classical and medieval times. Shakespeare demythified and devalued the heroism and love of the Western literature tradition. The main reason why this play is ambivalent and absurd is that there are many problems that are difficult to analyze using the traditional genre concept. So, Shakespeare could have used new dramatic styles and techniques to solve these problems. This play replaced the development of the plot with a discussion of moral philosophical values, and the two plots of this play, the war and the love plot, deflated the expectations of chivalry and courtly love. Thersites is the only constant character who measures the others. His evaluation of other characters is very negative and cynical. No one in this play can escape from his malicious tongue. He awakens other's false idealism and values in vain. Shakespeare delved into the fictional and anachronistic aspects of value through discussion, kind of detachment of epic drama, and anticlimax. Shakespeare spoke in a cynical tone that life and love are different from those of the past through these dramatic techniques. The play raises certain questions, such as whether Shakespeare had deliberately ignored all the genres' distinctions or why did it focus on the foolish aspects of the heroes and the uncertainties in love. It appears that Shakespeare wanted to tell us how complex life and the world are and how difficult it is to distinguish worthy virtues of real life from false idealism.
